Is society too concerned with celebrity status? Are we Celeb-obsessed nowadays?

What do you think?

I think we're absolutely celebrity obsessed...someone like Britney Spears can't take two steps without a camera capturing it these days - and in her case, while she's having what appears to be a mental breakdown, it's doing more harm than good.  A lot of people know more about what's going on in celebs' lives than in the rest of the world - they could tell you who so-and-so is dating, where so-and-so was seen last week, but couldn't tell you what's going on overseas, or even in their own Province/State/Country.  It's crazy.

I completely agree. The world is too concerned with celebs. Most people I think tune in to watch Entertainment Tonight and not CNN. It's insane.

I saw a show once and they were asking people questions about celebrities. Most people knew the answers to those particular questions. Then the same people were asked who the Vice President of the United States was (these were Americans) and some of them didn't know. How clueless is that? I mean, ok, I might not be able to list every Representative for my individual state (shame on me!), but the Vice President? Gimme a break!

I think we are way too celebrity obsessed, but I think it is in part because we have been taught by the media that celebrity obsession is normal and important. Even supposed serious media is much more focused on celebrities than in years past. I also think the internet has brought a lot more of that culture to us.

That's a very valid point, I think. The internet has brought a whole new dynamic to what we know and can look up nowadays.

uh, let me think....YES!!! Holy Shizzz, Yes!!! and way tooo dang much! It's so annoying! Everyone has to be like the celebrities, we are doomed to listen to their idiotic versions of politics, their so called news interferes with real important news. The way they act affects how todays teens act.....they believe the stupider they act, the more popular they'll be. We're supposed to forgive them after drug binges because they went to rehab for 10 days and suddenly found Jesus. They get out of jail, for the most part. OMG! The whole celebrity culture just gets to me! I really believe they affect people's self esteem as well because they have to be perfect, so other people look at them and consider their imperfections to be so horrible that they go for plastic surgery, depression, etc. People today are just too concerned with celebrities to the point where we don't just have to look like them but we have to act, smell, eat, and vote like a majority of these pinheads! And the fact that people actually make careers out of following these people around to get a picture of their flabby beach bodies to make the rest of America feel better about themselves jusrt blows my mind!

whoa! *stopping to type to take  adeep breath* lol But for real, I think this whole celebrity culture has gotten completly out of hand, America is way too consumed with it.
