It's long been rumored that Matilda & Stephen were more than just rivals for the throne.   Common knowledge that Matilda's match with Geoffrey of Anjou was less than successful; in fact, she left him several times & flounced back home to Daddy in the first few years of their marriage.  What's interesting is that the last time she left him & was adamant about not going back, she abruptly changed her mind & hightailed it over to Anjou; & then Henry II was born.

Geoffrey of Anjou's will is also fascinating.  It stated that Henry had to agree to the terms of it sight unseen or else Geoffrey could not be buried.   Nothing that makes you say OK faster than a decomposing dad in the great hall LOL

As Geoffrey's eldest son, Henry received the Angevin inheritance of Anjou, Maine, & Touraine, while his quarrelsome younger brother Geoffrey received the castles of Mirabeau, Chinon, & Louden....about what you would expect considering their birth order.

BUT....Geoffrey's will further stated that if Henry was successful in recovering Matilda's inheritance & becoming King of England, then he had to cede the Angevin inheritance to Geoffrey Jr.

Naturally greedy Henry did no such thing, & Junior proclaimed that their father's will had been drawn to favor HIM, whose legitimacy could not be doubted.

How ironic it would be if Matilda had gone back to Geoffrey because she was carrying Stephen's child....& there was not a single solitary drop of Plantagenet blood IN the Planatagenets???

Wasn't Geoffrey 15 and Matilda close to 30 when they married? It is something to think about, Stephen being the true father of Henry. Just as it is possible thru the descent from William I to the present queen whether or not there was an heir to the throne born on the wrong side of the blanket, but with all the cousins marrying cousins the line would have been put right within a generation or two....Judy

Matilda was about 10 years older than Geoffrey, & it was another 5, I think, before Henry was born.  So they would have been 20 & 30 at the time.  It couldn't have been so bad, Geoffrey was known as "Geoffrey the Handsome".   Judy's right about the intermarriage thing LOL but there were no Plantagenets to intermarry WITH as both Junior & Henry's other brother William died without issue.  I can't remember exackly....but William was the nice brother with no ambition as I recall, stuck in the middle of the other 2 with their competitiveness, & I think he died fairly young as a result of the quarrel?

How come Geoffrey didn't get to be King of Jerusalem, anyone know?  Fulk of Anjou, his father, was King of Jerusalem.  Was that some sortof elective position?

Ref #4. Geoffrey, Count of Anjou did not succeed his father Fulk as King of Jerusalem because Fulk gained that title through his marriage (his second) to Melisende, daughter and heir of Baldwin II, King of Jerusalem. They reigned jointly until Fulk was killed in a hunting accident. Queen Melisende then ruled jointly with her son, Baldwin III.
Geoffrey was the son from Fulk's first marriage and had no blood ties with the Kings of Jerusalem.

William of Poitou, Henry II's brother supposedly died of a broken heart when he was refused permission by the Church to marry Isabella, the widow of his second cousin William, Count of Boulogne and Mortain.

Now, did YOU, purposely put in the spam about meeting singles?  I doubt it...but we don't need that sort of thing on our boards.

If you look back at your other posts they were all sent from your email and they all contain spam.

Which Plantagenet is your ancestor?  Do you have a family tree which shows it?
Several members can trace thier lineage to some pretty interesting historical people.  I think we have at least one who is from the Yorks as well.
