Although there is little to no hard evidence, many historieans think there may have been a romantic relationship between the Empress Matilda and King Stephen.

What is everyone's view on this one?

I have always leaned toward them having a relationship because of Matilda's behavior when Stephen was her captive.  She ended up trading him for her brother, Robert of Gloucester, when she could have easily had Stephen killed & gotten her throne the old-fashioned way.  It certainly would not have been the first time a conflict over a throne came to an abrupt halt because of the sudden death of one ofthe parties involved.  Matilda had the power in her grasp & she chose not to exercise it.  The fact that Henry II would allow her NOTHING to do with ANYTHING after he finally assumed the throne following Stephen's death speaks volumes about the degree of irked he was that she let this golden opportunity slip thru her fingers.

I read a great book called the Fatal Crown, about Stephen and Matilda. It is a fictional romance but has been pretty well researched. It argues for a romance between the two. In my opinion  YEP  YEP!

Hey...I read that too some time ago!  Big, thick book!  There was some speculation in that or another book that Henry II could be the son of Stephen and Matilda.  There's enough smoke...could be there was some fire.   -Methinks

Anyone read "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett? Great book set around this period, well worth reading.

I have begun reading an old book I came across called The Seven Queens of England, just finished the first section on Matilda/Maud.   So I am wondering, if there was this attraction between them, and if Henry I was so concerned about his liegemen swearing fealty to his daughter and upholding her right to succeed him on the throne, why he didn't have her marry Stephen instead of Geoffrey of Anjou?  Especially considering the vast age difference between Matilda and Geoffrey.  Geoffrey was more of a child than a man when he married Matilda.  You would think Henry would want to provide her with a strong, adult male to protect her rights instead of a young kid like Geoffrey.

There is an olddd thread here (waaaaaaay back) about Matilda and Stephen (possibly in the "mysteries" board).  At any rate, At the time which Henry I married Matilda to Geoffrey, Stephen didn't have a whole lot to offer.  He was not a first son, don't forget.  Whereas, Geoffrey was the heir to Anjou and would eventually bring that into England's budding "empire".

Perhaps, Henry I, was also aware of Stephen's "short comings", in the, ability to rule, department.  And while, I personally, like to think there was a "romance" between Stephen and Matilda, it IS only speculation.

The "age difference" in those times and especially between royalty/nobility, was a moot issue.  It would not even have come into the equation.  The only time it would have been a consideration, would have been when heirs were needed and the woman was past "child bearing" age.

I wonder if the whole "romance" issue of these two was really purpotrated by Eleanor of Aquitaine.  Her "court of Love" (especially unrequited love) was noted for these type of stories.  (just a thought)

This is a particularly old thread but one which has a topic we have not discuss of late and I thought some of the newer members may like to jump on this discussion as it is a fun speculation.

I have also read that Henry didn't have too much faith in Stephen.....I also read that he and Matilda had an attraction for each other, and that he could be Henry II father.
