Hello all.....I have been trying to locate parents of my GGGrandfather GEORGE  STAGG for some time now......the simple thing to do would be to purchase a Death Certificate but I don`t spend money freely !!
I have found an entry which I think may be him at Yeovil, 17/8/1864, 5c 329.

Could someone please tell me where I may find this information ?

George had two marriages......
(1) Elizabeth ROGERS,17/6/1833, Martock.
(2)Susan WEAKLEY, 1847.

Every  STAGG researcher that I have come across is "brickwalled" at this point in time........anyone had success with further information ?
It is just parents of GEORGE that I require to continue this Tree........have kids and marriages etc.....thank you.
Regards,
Val.

Mike.....I did post a reply to this but I think it has gone into cyber space.........

I hate to say this but the East Coker STAGG family isn`t my family......they could be connected in years gone bye but I havn`t found a connection.
My George was born in Stoke......have contacted a lot of people on GenesReUnited re the East Coker STAGGs.....can`t find a link to them.

Thank you kindly for looking for me......it is very much appreciated.
Regards, Val.

Hi Val

I am assisting Mike with your search and have been searching the censuses, etc.  Not sure if you have access to them?  Anyway, here are my findings.

1861 Census of England

Living at Lower Street, Stoole

George Stagg  Head  49  Ag Lab  born Stoke, Somerset c1811-1812
Susan  Wife  36
William  son  24
Eliza  daur  21
Alfred  18
Edwin  10
Henry   7
Albert   5
Walter  2

1851 Census

George Stagg  37  head  Shepherd born Stoke c1813-1814
Susan  26  wife  Glover
Joseph  16   Milking Boy
William  11  Shepherd
Eliza  9   Glover
Alfred  7
Edwin  5 months
Sarah W
Caroline Wakley  sister-in-law  24  Glover
Caroline Wakley  niece  2

1841 Census

At Stoke under Hamdon

Geo Stagg 25  Ag Lab
Elizabeth  25  Wife
Joseph 5
Mary  3
William  2

I checked the 1871 but could find neither George nor Susan.  I think the death you found for George is correct.

I also found these.  There is no age on the first one.  The second one if correct would mean she was born c1814.

Deaths Sep 1861
Stagg  Susan    Yeovil  5c 309
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Deaths Dec 1869
Stagg  Susan  55  Yeovil  5c 340

Hope the above is of some help.

Marian

Mike .....thank you for your patience......you must see how frustrating I`m feeling here.......there are so many different STAGG families in Somerset......they probably are connected in years gone by.......
Also, thank you for the Link in the following message.....will save it and do some looking......

Have an easy day.
Val.

Hello Marion.....thank you for helping out here.......yes, I have these Census details.......thanks to some other researchers and I also have obtained some from FreeCen.....I think.....the senior brain lets me down at times......

Re Susan (WEAKLEY/ WAKELY) STAGG......
I have estimated her birth as 1824.....I would have judged this by Census info.
Death date that I have in my notes is 3/8/1861 at Stoke.
Seeing that there is another "Susan" listed......who knows, I could be wrong........
I never take information for granted unless I check and recheck.......isn`t it fun !!

Thanks again......appreciated.
Val.

OK Val, so the first Susan Stagg death must be the correct one.

Marian.....I am going with the death in 1861 but still have an open mind re the latter one.....she was quite young in 1861...? She definately died before the 1871 Census....I see (2) of her younger children were in the Follett (bil)household 1871.

Much appeciated Marian....
Cheers, Val.

Val,  Don't forget they often rounded up ages on census records so not always correct
I wouldn't rely on an age listed on a census record without checking with other sources

Hi Liz.....yes , I know there are lots of discrepancies in ages.....I take it with a grain of salt......this is why I am not totally convinced that the earlier death (1861) is our Susan.

Hope your weather is kind to you.
Kind regards,
Val.

Hi Val

Yes Liz is quite right about ages on the censuses.  The 1841 in particular does not give much detail at all, and adult ages were in fact rounded down to the nearest five years.  But on the other censuses too there are numerous errors in all departments, not just ages.  We always advise that you don't narrow your searches down too much, be very open-minded and don't assume anything!  There will be many surprises along the way.

Marian, Do you know why they rounded up/down ages on census records.  What would be the point of this as then the record would not be accurate
Of course people could have lied about their ages as well.
The ages on the immigration records are often incorrect as well - often deliberate I think for whatever reason

Hi Liz

I think back then they were just wanting to take a census of the people in the land, and I doubt if they attached any importance to people's ages at that time.  Certainly it would never have occurred to them that we in the 21st century would be studying those forms 150 or more years later with such great interest!  As time went on, the censuses became more and more detailed, as we know, and today each head of household has to fill in several pages of very detailed information.  Not a lot of help to us, but at least it will be helpful to future generations of family researchers.

Marian,  Thanks for that info - very interesting!

In Australia if you deliberately put wrong details on a census form and get found out there is  a huge fine which would be a deterrent to most people

We don't have too many census records which have survived but we do have 1828 and 1841 which are very helpful in the early days
Unless you know where a family was living it is very difficult to locate census records as they are listed by area and all on card index.  Also they only recorded the name of the head of the household and the others were only listed by number - say 4 females & 2 males with no names at all in the early days
You are very lucky in England to have the wonderful 1881 census which has proved so helpful locating those elusive english ancestors
Liz
