i have spoke to a few of you about this but i went to see a counsellor to try and deal with how down i have been feeling to be knocked back even further. I can not believe her attitude. As soon as i said i was gay she got defensive saying that she could not help me as we look at things diferently as society says i should get married have kids etc. As someone who knows they are gay and not 100% totally comfortable with that yet, it was a real knock back!!!!!!.

She did not even help me contact anyone who could help me even though she said i needed a gay counsellor even though i went to see her with something totally irrelevant. why ?????

Was this a private or a NHS counsellor? If you were referred by your gp, then s/he should have made sure that you were referred to a gay friendly counsellor. Being gay may not be relevant to your problem, but you still need a gay friendly counsellor and not one who sounds positively homophobic! I'm seeing a counsellor at the moemnt and I made sure that she was gay friendly (even though I wasn't seeing her because of my sexuality) because I've seen counsellors in the past who weren't and they haven't been helpful at all. if you were referred I'd go back and ask to be re-referred to one that's gay friendly and strt again from scratch.

Hang in there, there are some counsellors worth they're weight in gold!

Sounds like she is just plain homophobic and shouldnt be in that job at all.

I thought counsellors were supposed to be able to help all sorts of people with all sorts of problems

Dont let her put you off - it sounds as though you just got unlucky in that you got her - and it sounds like she probably could do with some help herself to overcome her attitude problem
