hi MK i've been with BT and cable, and as far as service goes they are pretty much the same... not many problems, not too much down time.... i hated the way BT cut the connection every 2 hours... annoying if your in chat, or if your on an old computer and it causes the system to crash.... ((as did mine)) i had a small disagreement with BT.... i was on the evening and weekend tarrif... i payed £8 a month ((think it was eight quid)) and could go on from 6pm-8am, and all weekend... 'apparently' they sent me 2 emails to my outlook account, that i didnt use, to tell me i was using too many of the evening and weekend hours i'd payed for, and then severed my connection, no word of warning ((apart from 'said' emails)) when i complained, they said that i wasn't allowed to re-connect after 2 hours, and i couldn't use more than 16 in any one week, and it said this in rule number 10.658 in the small print in something they also sent to my 'unused' email account... so i told them i wouldn't pay my phone bill untill someone spoke sence to me about what had happened, so they cut my phone off lol, i suppose they just heald all the cards, i didnt stand a chance.... so if you have a choice, go with cable, 'booooo' at BT! lol... between loosing my bt connection and signing with cable, i used a few pay as you go isp's, and they cost a fortune.... a package is the best value... i don't realy know alot about isp's, but what i did pick up is stick with the big companies, smaller isp's have terrible connection problems.... who are you with now? hugs janx |

I've got BT-Yahoo broadband which is ok. I used to have cable for telephone, tv and internet when I lived down south but can't get it just where i am . So decided to go for BT adsl which is high speed but which uses the phone line rather than the cable network. You share the line between internet and phones with the aid of 'micro filters' which split the connections into different frequency bands. I got a free adsl modem and it was easy to install. I get a download speed of 576K wich is quite good (was 512K when I had cable), and about 256K upload speed. But.... it can't ever be faster whereas with cable there are usually options for higher speed - at extra cost, of course. Since they teamed up with Yahoo you get web space and pop3 email addy's (ie use Outlook Express) and you can also access email via the bt-yahoo web site, for what it's worth. The web space is quite severely bandwidth limited though - I uploaded a couple of mp3 music files, played them and got told i'd used up my quota! It also costs £29.99/month compared to £25/month I used to pay telewest for broadband, so it isn't cheap. But it's been fairly reliable so far and when I had a problem the support was quite helpful and human! Of course, you have to sign up to a minimum 1 year contract.... |

PS! I should just mention that anyone who switches to broadband should really really also invest in an internet security package if they don't already have it. The higher connection speed means that unwanted intrusions and loss and/or theft of data can happen frighteningly quickly. I use Norton Internet Security which is ok, though you can never be absolutely secure. Back in 2002 when I first got connected via broadband I didn't have anything - and, you guessed it, got caught out. I picked up a virus which proceeded to secretly email random ms Word documents from my system and send them to addresses from my address book! It was a big shock when I realised what was happening, lol. Made worse and extremely worrying by the fact that many of the documents which got sent as attachments were very private and very sensitive love letters to a lady doctor I had a thing about... And, yes, I was her patient, lol. I just felt sick when I realised they'd got sent to all and sundry, you can imagine lololol. I just hope noone ever opened those attachments.... So it's also a good idea NOT to keep such things on your hard disk - be warned!!! |

i knew i had created this thread ,found it anyway.. i think i know what package it is you mentioned Jan about the 16 hours thing... i always remember the difficulties i first had when i connected to the net those few years ago..and i could not understand why i couldent connect to the web...after much lack of success it was something to do with user withheld number and i had to place a prefix in front of the dial up number.?.i never quite read the start up user help thing properly:( eventually i logged on but i couldent believe sometimes how slow it all was as it must have been due to the ISP not having enough servers running?? and my laptop was brandnew too...the ISP i am with now i dont wish to advertise but its a wanadoo one...im not happy with it,maybe because i know there is much to choose from now,and you wonder whats round the corner too..before wanadoo i was with another and paid by the seconds ..blimey tut i understand about making your PC secure LostFem..something which i do..i often wonder if i want speed or just quality of service sometimes from an ISP and value for money thankyou for the replies to this.. |
