intense_female : and I think (from my experience at SLC) that alot of people are interested in healing

intense_female : When I first heard about Rei Ki it made so much sense to me
intense_female : because in the bible Jesus would "lay on hands" to heal

yoga(tm) : Okay the first thing I want to say about Reiki....
yoga(tm) : it's A healing system, a specific healing system
yoga(tm) : not the only one, it's just a title for a certain one
yoga(tm) : this is sort of one of my pet peeves
yoga(tm) : not all healing is Reiki, and Reiki elitists make it seem so great but it's just a method
yoga(tm) : energy isn't Reiki, energy is ki or chi or whatever
yoga(tm) : Reiki is just a title made up by some Japanese guy back before WWII
yoga(tm) : So okay, let me tell the story of how Reiki started, or was brought back, I'll tell the short version
yoga(tm) : Mikao Usui was said to be a teacher in Japan
yoga(tm) : some say he was Buddhist, some say he was Christian, but the story is fuzzy so no one really knows
yoga(tm) : one day his students asked him how Jesus did healing
yoga(tm) : he couldn't say
yoga(tm) : so he decided he needed to know
yoga(tm) : so he went from Kyoto to America to study the American version of the bible thinking he might find it there
yoga(tm) : no luck
yoga(tm) : so then he went back to Kyoto
yoga(tm) : and thought maybe since the Buddha did healing too he might find it in the temples
yoga(tm) : so after a lot of searching
yoga(tm) : he eventually found some old scrolls in Sanskrit at some temple in japan
yoga(tm) : they had descriptions of how to do it and a bunch of funny symbols that he didn't understand and stuff
yoga(tm) : and the Buddhists there couldn't help him, they said they gave up healing
yoga(tm) : they thought it better to focus on healing the mind not the body
yoga(tm) : so he was stuck
yoga(tm) : so he came up with a plan to go meditate and hope it'll come to him
yoga(tm) : he went up to Mt. Koriyama
yoga(tm) : meditated for 21 days
yoga(tm) : recieved a vision
yoga(tm) : and blam, he got it. lol. At least that's how the story goes
yoga(tm) : and he went around teaching it until he died
yoga(tm) : that's the reader's digest version, I skipped over all kinds of stuff but you get the gist

yoga(tm) : anyway, the history is all fuzzy
yoga(tm) : lots of conflicting stories
yoga(tm) : but I thought I'd give you some background
yoga(tm) : so I'll go into how it's supposed to work
yoga(tm) : when someone wants to learn Reiki they go to a Reiki master
yoga(tm) : the master performs an "attunement"
yoga(tm) : it's been explained to me that the attunement consists of ..
yoga(tm) : the master "blowing" a huge amount of ki/chi/whatever
yoga(tm) : through their ki pathways to sort of seal them open
yoga(tm) : specifically the pathways from the crown chakra to the minor chakras on the hands
yoga(tm) : that way the person channels ki from their crown through their hands
yoga(tm) : for hands on healing
yoga(tm) : let me stop here for a moment just in case any of this needs clarifying
solarchiwarrior : isn't to open the crown so they can draw from outside chi?

yoga(tm) : yes solar

yoga(tm) : the pathway runs from the crown to the hands, that specific one anyway
yoga(tm) : so the master blows ki through the initiate or student
yoga(tm) : to open the pathway
yoga(tm) : this is for first level mostly
yoga(tm) : to start the hands on stuff
yoga(tm) : once someone has been attuned
yoga(tm) : they become a channel
yoga(tm) : by this I mean they are not directing the energy or doing anything willfully
yoga(tm) : they are simply acting as a channel for the ki
yoga(tm) : they put their hands on the person...
yoga(tm) : and if that person is energetically out of balance ..
yoga(tm) : is acts as a vacuum, pulling ki through the Reiki channel (person)
yoga(tm) : and into the person receiving the healing
yoga(tm) : so it really is sort of the quick fix solution for someone wanting to learn healing but not wanting to take the time
yoga(tm) : lol like me

yoga(tm) : because it's immediate
yoga(tm) : you don't have to convince yourself, that takes a long time
yoga(tm) : you just do it
intense_female : do masters tend to just attune anyone?
yoga(tm) : what do you mean by anyone, do you mean are they selective?

yoga(tm) : lol okay here's the deal with that
intense_female : do you have to take a class?
intense_female : any training?

yoga(tm) : there is the "traditional" Reiki line, and then there's the rest
yoga(tm) : hold up
yoga(tm) : wait
yoga(tm) : lol I'm getting there
yoga(tm) : Mantis, they blow through the person being attuned
yoga(tm) : the traditional line says people should prove they are sincere, and therefore pay loads of money
yoga(tm) : there's a big story behind it that I'm not going to go into, but it costs 10,000 dollars to be a master
yoga(tm) : the non-traditionalists say
yoga(tm) : there need to be more healers so why not just spread the knowledge
yoga(tm) : and many of them do it for free
yoga(tm) : and yes according to the definition of Reiki, people do need to be taught by a master

yoga(tm) : if there isn't a master and there aren't attunements, then it's not reiki, it's a different healing system
yoga(tm) : Reiki is not the only system and maybe not the best
yoga(tm) : but if you want to say you practice Reiki then you've got to go through the steps
yoga(tm) : yes I did pay for my first class
