Hello again,

You assisted some months ago in my(fruitless)attempts to find some roots,or existing descendants of James McDermott and of his father Henry(Bc1793,Ireland)in Ireland.

Henry appears firstly on the 1841 Census in Liverpool and his son on his marriage to Elizabeth Antrobus in 1845(I have the M.Cert.).

I have recently received some information from another descendant of my McDermott family who lives in Canada. She had been in contact with a John McDermott living in the USA who descends from a McDermott family in Dundalk,County Louth, but we don't know if there is a connection to my ancestral McDermotts'.

John McDermott traces his family back to a Peter McDermott B.c1780/1790s but we have no information on siblings of this person although his parents could have been a Peter M McDermott and Anne.Other information which could be relevant are that the family owned a farm in Bellurgan and that one of the McDermotts' married a Mulligan and, possibly, that Mulligans' were still living there at least as recently as the 1990s.

According to this source the McDermott family were involved, with other Dundalk families in the building of St Mary's Church in the 1830s',and his Grandfather?(John McDermott's)John McDermott did the woodwork in the church.

I wonder if there is any chance of assistance from you in gaining further information of this McDermott family and establishing if there is any link with my ancestral McDermott family.

Best wishes,

Rob and Jan Kellett,Morrinsville,NZ

Hello Mike,

Haven't had a problem with the Antrobus line,Have the parents as you have found, also traced the Paternal Line back to William Antrobus, born in the mid 1600s.
Have also had contact with some distant Antrobus relatives which helped out.
I think my Antrobus line was from the Farnworth, near Warrington area,I think Elizabeth was born in Farnworth.
Antrobus is the name of a village about 10 miles south of Warrington,in Cheshire,I suppose that to be the origen of the Antrobus name in the area.

Regards,

Rob

Hi Rob

I am Marian and I am assisting Mike tonight with your search.  I have been checking out the censuses tonight for Henry McDermott.  I may not have found anything new that you haven't already seen, but nevertheless these are my findings so far:

1841

Henry McDermott age 45  (born 1796)  Labourer living in Knotty Ash, Walton on the Hill parish, living with the Fitzgara and Carty families.

We have to remember that ages are not always accurate, and can vary by as much as ten years.  On the 1841 census, adults' ages were rounded down to the nearest five years.  So Henry may easily have been born as early as 1792.

I also found a 15 year old (or older) Henry McDermott living in Church Street, in the same parish of Walton on the Hill.

1851

Living at 12 Cranmer Street
James McDermott age 28 Labourer b Ireland 1822/23
Elizabeth McDermott  wife  age 28 b Lancashire 1822/23
Henry   son  age 4 b Knotty Ash 1846/47

Also:
Living at The Cock Tavern, Chapel Terrace, Willesden, Middlesex
Henry McDermot  widower age 59 Victualler b Ireland 1792
Jane McDermot daughter age 26
Henry McDermot son age 24 Clerk b Middlesex
Ann McDermot daughter age 22 b Middlesex

1861

Henry McDermott, vegetable dealer in Liverpool, who I think you also found.

I will now search the BMD records.

This looks like a distinct possibility for Henry's death record.  Birth year works out at 1793.  What do you think?

Deaths June 1867

McDermott  Henry  74  W. Derby  8b 284

Hi Rob

Just checking the 1861 for James and Elizabeth.

1861

Living at 30 Cherry Lane, Walton
James and Elizabeth  McDermot(t) ages 37 and 36 (should not they be 38?)
Children
Henry Francis  15
John James  10
Mary  8
James  4
William  2

I am sure you will have noticed the appalling spelling on this census.  Knottey Ash, Dundock, Farneth, etc.  So, what else has been mistransbribed?

hello Marian,

I had assumed that the Henry who died in 1867 was "my"Henry,I do intend sending for the D.Cert.but it may not prove anything. The best I could hope for there would be that the death was registered by someone I can identify, otherwise it won't prove anything.I'll have a look at the younger Henry on the 1841 census.

Regards,

Rob

Hi Rob

I have found someone on Genes Reunited who appears to have both James and Henry McDermott in her tree.  I am awaiting a response from her.

Hi Rob

Cheryl has replied already.  She has in her tree Henry McDermott 1793-1867.  Son James 1821-1891 married Elizabeth Antrobus b Farnworth.  They had a daughter Mary 1853-1889 who married Richard Rushton.

She says her Irish ancestors left Ireland and moved to the Liverpool area in England. She thinks there are still McDermotts in Dundalk. They used to have a family farm there and it may still be owned by descendants (perhaps with a different surname now). At least it was back in the early 1990's.

Can I give her your e-mail address so she can contact you and share more information?
