Q MAG COVERS U2 December 31, 2008 posted by: m2
As Q promised, the new issue with U2 on the cover is released today, and reader Declan M. was kind enough to send in a scan of what it looks like. (You can click the thumbnail on atu2.com for a larger version.) Also, even though we gave out the address about 10 days ago, we should also note that the Q U2 mini-site is now (cough, cough) officially open. Use the URL if you missed it earlier.

In that article Bono refers to the new tour they are planning as a "feat of engineering genius." And he talks about outdoors which means huge arena tours are on the go which I am kinda excited for, I haven't seen them under the sky since 1997 and Popmart. I can't imagine what they have come up with this time around. Just reading this article is making me more and more excited...and I didn't even think that was possible. I love the bit about the new songs! It is such a tease though...I just wanna hear it so bad. I know I have company in that wish. hj |

I have butterflies, I'm so excited about the new album & tour! Seeing these great pictures for real, seals the deal, that it is REALLY, FINALLY happening! We will get our new U2 album, it's been so long, I think I was going to crack if if didn't come out soon! The eyeliner....hmmmmm, he looks mysteroius & a little insane in some of those shots, I wonder if this is a "new" character, I hope he just wears it for that. I think he's hot no matter what! |

Bono's eyeliner reminds me of Keith Richards...and Capt. Jack Sparrow He's borrowing from Gavin Friday. Pirate and/or cabaret singer? Barnes and Noble has the Q mag's next issue coming out Jan. 25th here in the States. Did I mention that waiting for the mag and the new CD is hard on my old nerves? I have already pre-ordered the deluxe set on Amazon. Also waiting for the re-launch of U2.com. Boys, lets get rolling on all this! Holidays are over. |

Don't worry too much, Dori...the U2 machine has never let us down in the past on great publicity and new ideas. I can't wait for my Q magazine! My thought on the eyeliner was sort of that it replaces the glasses. Everyone tells Bono to take off the glasses; but he has said that he hides behind them. In the Q photos he has his glasses off in some of the pics, but when he does we see the eyeliner in replacement. As if the glasses are off...but not really off. |

Yeah, I agree that the shades were a kind of mask, and so is the eyeliner. He has light-sensitivity and allergies. Also, he has a private side that he is entitled to keep. If the eyes are a window to the soul, it is obvious that Bono does not want the public to own his. I thought the bowler hat and umbrella was a swipe at the folks who say he is insufficiently Irish (So do you have to support the Provo-IRA to be really Irish? I think not.) and pretentious. The sterotypical British businessman's signature look has been captured by the artist Rene Magritte in particular as a symbol of bland conformist 20th centtury bourgeois life. MacCartney has a collection of his paintings. Bono does not wear suits and ties, though, and anyone will tell you he is not a conformist. The pretention is merely him being theatrical, which he loves. Not the shades with big stars on them. Elton John, eat your heart out. Or maybe it is like Ringo, who also wears fancy shades. Starr-star? Also, in the play and movie "Cabaret, " the gay emcee and the ladies wear hats and canes, and dance and sing. Bono's eyeliner reminds me a bit of the emcee. He also wore makeup in the "Zooropa" and "Actung Baby" era in the "One" and "Lemon" videos. Also, who can forget MacPhisto? Love those quirky characters, B-man. |

Bono admires old Vaudeville Theatre I believe. I seem to recall him speaking about past relatives being involved in that type of theatre. We also know he likes Charlie Chaplin films. I think Bono's characters he develops are fun and unique. Not the typical rock show stuff. And we know that U2 act out songs on stage. Take for example the way 'Until The End Of The World' is acted out with each tour, or 'Bullet The Blue Sky'. U2 are more than musicians. U2 are true performers. I believe those are some reasons they do not get boring to fans. |

That's a cool thought about the eyeliner....and yeah they really are so dramatic as performers...when I was dragging everybody I know to U23D my friend Veronica commented on what a great performer she thought Bono was, he was so much more than just 'the Rock Star' doing the rock star pose. hj |
