| THE EIGHT BROCADE EXERCISES COW GAZES AT MOON OVER SHOULDER A few things to be aware of in this exercise, as with all the exercises, do not force it, turn as far as you comfortably can, maintain a straight back, do not lean forwards or overextend as you return your hands from the backward facing out position to the hands in front of chest position, keep your focus on the tip of your index finger 1) From horse stance breath in bring hands up to chest height 2 ) On out breath.....Move weight to right hand side whilst turning waist until you are looking directly behind...the right hand is carried right around and arm is rotated so as palm is facing away when arm is extended....the left arm follows so as the palm ends up near left shoulder with palm facing away 3) On in breath turn back to front bringing hands back to front of chest and weight back to even weighting 4) On outbreath return hands to side 5) On in breath bring hands back to chest level 6) On out breath now take weight to left hand side rotate waist and move hands and arms around until palms face outwards behind with right hand near left shoulder 7) On in breath return to forward facing position 8) On out breath return hands to sides Repeat three more times on each side Medical functions are as follows:- It internally massages body organs...tones the kidneys, liver and spleen. It activates the girdle meridian and moves energy from one kidney to the other then back. The girdle channel is known as the Dai mo and runs around the body at the level of the lower dan tien just below the belly button, around the waist and connects at the back just below the kidney level, this channel is what is known as one of the eight extra-ordinary channels more of which I shall mention on brief treatise on the meridians in another piece, any how it is good with this exercise to also move the chi from one kidney round the belly to the other, as you turn to the back facing position and then in the opposite direction as you turn the other way.....and of course remember to keep attention on the index finger as you return to the frontal position.....have fun but remain concentrated the deeper our emptiness the better.
