When the old man tells you a story Listen to what he has to say, He has a lifetime of memories From his birth to this day. Don't laugh behind his back when he tells you He fought for his country and his King, Although he may be an old man It doesn't mean his mind is wandering. When his face lights up with delight Think about what he can see, Although he may be looking at you, His mind is with the Infantry. He can see himself marching, Singing his victory song. Although he may be an old man, Once he was brave and strong. Let him tell you about his family, His parents that are now both dead. How Mother served up the home made broth, While Father cut the bread. It's true when he tells you he worked as a boy, Slaving for a penny or two, So just be glad you go to school, And somebody's working for you. When the old man tells you a story, Listen to what he has to say, Let him keep his pride alive, And tell you about his day. He's an old man thinking about the past When he was just a lad, So sit and listen to him my boy, As he listened to his own Grandad.
