Awhile back I was having a conversation with a fellow bird lover on the subject of diets......not just for birds, but for humans too. She asked me to name off a few of the foods our birds get on a daily basis. One mentioned was Cantaloupe. As she had never heard of the benefits of this easy to obtain food, I took some time to chat around to several other bird fans......and apparently this food is definitely overlooked understated in the bird world. LOL.....I could find no mention of it here either! It is one food that contains few calories and supplies a WONDERFUL source of Vitamin C and A!!! The best part - you don't have to cook it!! It is served fresh!! Fresh is ALWAYS best!! Should anyone wish to read more about this food, two of my favorite links are below. Crystal |

I wash everything in one of three veggie washes that I bought. Like cantaloupe, vinegar makes me kinda curl my toes. I cannot imagine drinking that stuff. I know people who do. I cannot even pour it without feeling sick. Truly I am not trying to be rude. I say stuff and hope my friends know I am not meaning to be ugly. Scents, smells and odors are a big problem for me. I'll shut up now. Annie |

It's true about all the people who handle your produce. And then even in the store, everybody is feeling the tomatoes and smelling the melons ... yikes, it's enuf to gross me out. My favorite thing about Italy was that they had disposable gloves in the produce section and you were not allowed to touch the fruits and veggies without wearing them! Wish that would become the cusom here. |

Wow ... what a great idea, Joanie! Italy is sure ahead of the game on that one! Abby |

THAT is a good idea! Hubby thinks I'm nutty as I put a plastic bag over my hands when observing the fruits, vegetables, and meat in the grocery store. I usually remind him......my "nuttyness" is probably the reason why we are never sick. Back to the cantalope thing - while the birds enjoy the fresh seeds from the fruit, I roasted a batch yesterday! The crunching this morning was loud! They were apparently a hit! Crystal |

We have canteloupe often and I would love to know how to roast the seeds for my Boo. At least to try, sounds like your birds love it. How is it accomplished? The seeds are so slippery.... how do you separate them from the 'goo'?? Then bake them?? |

The method I used was the oven. 300 degrees for about an hour.....turning them over a couple of times. I actually turned the oven off and left them in there for awhile longer. They were very crunchy! Regarding the cleaning method - pretty much the same way you would a pumpkin. Goop the mess on layered paper towels and pick out most of the strings. I wasn't patient enough with this so I dried some stringy stuff too. It separated easily when dried. If I'm not mistaken - there is a bird food company that adds dried cantaloupe pieces and/or seeds to their mix....Kaytee?? I may attempt the slices/pieces this week... probably have to soak in orange juice to keep the color. Crystal |

My sis in law used to do my grocery shopping for me and when she would arrive home I'd remind her to wash her hands. Those supermarket carts are gross with bacteria. She said that in Tennessee every market has antibacterial wipes to wipe your cart handle and baby seat before using it. Smart, since babies in diapers sit in that seat. The checkers here put fresh foods in the same bag with cleaning supplies. Milk with Clorox. Broccoli with dryer sheets. I courteously corrected them when I was shopping but my current shopper comes in with the items mixed in the same bag. Checkers are observed for speed so they are afraid they will be too slow and get fired. I understand that, but the manager needs to train them to watch what goes into those bags. I have always worried about the harvesters of fresh foods. I have seen magazine type shows on TV that show the conditions under which pickers work. It's truly awful. Annie |

Annie, they have antibacterial wipes at the cart stands in my favourite grocery store now too, and I've noticed that some of the other chains are putting them in as well. I think it's a wonderful idea. I carry one of those waterless hand cleaners in my purse, Purell. I use it whenever I have to use shopping cars or baskets where they don't have a "wipe" dispenser. It gives me the heebeejeebies to think of what could be on my hands after handling things that some who aren't very fussy have handled. Abby |

Moving Dudemacsmom's message to correct thread. Annie I loved the suggestion in the previous post about roasting the cantaloupe seeds. Could we do the same with watermelon seeds? | |

cantaloupe is very expensive where I live. Most of the year, IF I can get them at all, they are around $4/each, for a smaller one, and even more if they are bigger. At that price, I rarely eat it myself, just give to the birds. Yesterday I went shopping and they had a special--5 of them for $5. I splurged and bought 2. |

DD, is your peroxide food grade? The drugstore kind, 3%, is toxic. Where did you get yours? An article I found says pharmacists aren't usually familiar with food grade. I figger a health food store may have it. Annie |

The below articles give some detailed info regarding Peroxide. It is a wonderful and safe way to disinfect! We keep a clean jar filled on the kitchen sink for the bottle and bowl brushes. I also use it to keep our toothbrushes disinfected. One of the articles states that you can use it in the dishwasher to keep dishes sparkley! We've had a major issue with that since we've moved to Las Vegas. The water is hard and the glass looks VERY cloudy if I use the dishwasher. The list of uses is long and we've never had any issues. The food grade type ...I've never seen around but after reading the second link - it sounds a bit scary. Apparently, it is very concentrated (35%) and can damage/burn the skin. Anyway.....just thought I'd share my two bits! Crystal |
