Hi Everyone
I'm new to this site, and would like to just say hello to all my fellow researchers.
I've been doing my family tree since 2002 and have managed to get back to the year c915 on my mothers English side, but am having problems tracing my fathers Irish side of the family.
I can't tell you how many times I've ended up with migraine in the past 4 and a bit years, looking through Irish sites with what little info I have. I'd be very grateful if anyone else would be prepared to look with new eyes for me.
I'm trying to trace a birth/marriage for Dennis Scannell and Kathleen(Katherine) Shanahan(Shannon).
All I know is that Dennis lived at some point before his death around the Tralee area, Kenmare has been mentioned as a place of birth also Boherbeigh as a place he lived in, he was born sometime in the middle 1800s around 1860ish was a aggricultural farm labourer on my grandparents marriage cert, and died around 1953ish in Tralee Co.Kerry
Kit is fairly unknown to me regarding details, all I have is that she died around 1924ish aged approx in her late 40s early 50s, when my grandad was 12yrs old, she was buried in the McCarthy family tomb either in Cloherbrien or old Boherbeigh cemetary in Kerry.
They had four children Michael Joseph (my grandad) Jeremiah, Johannah and Mary Ellen who were all raised in the Tralee area.
I'd be grateful for any assisstance however small, I realize how hard it is to find someone with this little information, but I really do not want to give up on my Irish roots.
Thanks in advance
Irene aka Stormy

Hi Irene ,i think we may be onto something,There was a Michael Scannell,Who married a Margaret Sheehan, around 1864,in killorgin county
Kerry.
Children were
John Scannell born 15th july 1865.....
Michael Scannell born 7th june 1867......
Johanna Scannell born 25th aug 1869......
Jeremiah Scannell born 22nd may 1871 .......
Andrew Scannell Born 18th may 1873
Kate Scannell born 13th april 1875.......
Margaret Scannell born 1878 in Tullig .........
The other Children all born in Killorgin
We found a Dennis Scannell married a Catherine Sheehan
With son John born 20th sep 1877
I Think we have two brothers who married two sisters
also found a Dennis Scannell,born 1st may 1867 Who's parents were
Michael Scannell and Johanna Sheehan.Possibly a cousin to the other two
So family were marrying into the Sheehan family, not sure yet of link,But all names of the first ones children,so all look related via sheehan.only odd one out was Andrew

Hi Irene,

Just to let you know that I am sending you some information on Boherbue of line, which by the way is on the way to Tralee. The church there is The Immaculate Conception. I also think that you will find that Cloherbrien comes into the Tralee area also I’ll find those details in the morning. There was a Hedge school reportedly there (Boherbue) in 1862. The baptismal records begin in 1833 with a gap from 1860 to 1863, for some reason and the marriage records begin in 1863. You see some Catholic records were not kept unless kept by the priest until after the emancipation. The Parish of Boherbue/ Kiskeam is a Cork parish in the diocese of Kerry because it borders both. You might like to contract the parish priest. I have found them of help when I got stuck. I’ll find his details and send them to you off line

Cáit

Irene.

One little piece of useless information is that Mary O'Connor, the actual Rose of Tralee, is buried in the old cemetery in Cloherbrien.

Cáit

I am not perfect. I am a work in progress
Peace Light Hope

Hi Micky

Thanks for that. Sorry I haven't been in contact with the site much lately but its proving to be a very busy time at work these past 3 months, and it doesn't look as though its going to get any slacker in the very near future.

I'm working on getting my promotion and it seems to be taking up alot of my spare time, so I only manage to get a few spare minutes a day to check out my emails.

Once I have acheived my goals in the workplace I should have more time to concentrate on resuming my research.

Thanks for all your help and anyone else who has taken the time to do a little research for me, its been much appreciated.

Irene

Hi Cait

Not useless information at all.
On my very first visit to Ireland my relatives took me to the old Cloherbrien cemetary to look for one of my great grandparents burial stones.
Of all the gravestones there, the only one which was in immaculate condition was Mary O'Connors, the very first Rose of Tralee.
Unfortunately the whole cemetary was in such a very poor condition I didn't have much luck finding my relative.
My cousins who had taken me to look, forewarned me about the condition of the cemetary, but I was unprepared to say the least at what we actually saw. It was almost a case of wearing protective clothing, and watching where I stepped to try and read the inscriptions.
The cemetary was very overgrown and uncared for, the old chapel derelict and dangerous, many of the graves themselves showed signs of breaking and I was made very aware not to stand on any of them as I could very well have ended up actually standing on the people themselves, an almost impossible task to avoid as the site was full of weeds and other plant life, and the stones themselves virtually invisible.
The condition of the cemetary was a shock, and I have to confess that I felt sad and a little angry that it had been left to get into that condition. I think if I had managed to find my relative at that point, I would have tried to at least tidy her plot.
We felt at that time, that if the local authority responsible for ensuring that Mary O'Connor's final resting place could be tended and cared for, then so could the cemetary as a whole.
Although if I remember correctly, one of my relatives told me later, that they were under the impression that it was one of Mary O'Connors descendants who tended her grave, or a descendant of the man who fell in love with her, though they could be wrong about this info.
Irene
