I am looking for information/dates on John Spillane who founded the Spillane Tobacco Company in 1829. I believe he was married to Catherine Purcell. Before this he was a farmer not far from Limerick City. He had a son, William, who married Helena Mulquin. William was, apparently, a fairly well known personage in Limerick - Mayor of Limerick, High Sheriff, first president of the Limerick Boat Club. From what I understand they had 16 children -the ones I know of are William, John A., Ernest (a Jesuit priest), Frank, Patrick, Isabelle, George, Grace. This information comes from a letter written to my mother by her cousin who is the son of William's brother John A. I know this sounds somewhat confusing - welcome to my world. I always thought John Spillane was married to Annie Revatta but now suspect this may be wrong (for me). I would really like to untangle it!! Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Cheers, Julie | |

Hi Mike, Wow!!! This is fantastic. Thank you so much for the the info and yes, I did get the docs you sent. I reckon you need all information possible to get a clear picture of your ancestors and how they lived. I've been wondering for years where this family fit in. Can you suggest where I might go to find out more about William's son William. This is the one I'm most interested in. My William came to Australia and married Cecelia Gaunt (she was born here). He was my g-grandfather. I hope you realise how much I appreciate your help. Cheers, Julie |

Hi Mike, Thanks again for all this. I have details on William S Spillane and his family here. Cecelia Gaunt was born in Melbourne and married, as you found, Wm in 1886. They had a number of children who I have managed to find. Interestingly, other than on VIC BDM CD's, I found them at my local history group in a list of nuns in Australia - 2 of the girls entered the convent. I seem to have a few religious in my ancestry! With the passenger info, I don't think that this is my Wm as he would only have been 5yo if the ship came to Aus in 1870. I have traced Cecilia a little way but will post re her at a later date. There is a fair bit of stuff for me to do on the Limerick Spillane 's now, and I just know I will confuse myself if I change tack at this point. Cheers, Julie |
