I am looking for information regarding my McConaghy family.  We believe they came from Antrim.  David and Sarah emigrated to New York around 1855 and then moved to Bobcaygeon, Ontario around 1858.
Although his father and mother James Allan and Mary McConaghy are mentioned on a memorial tombstone in Bobcaygeon, we believe they did not emigrate to Canada.
There is a mention in a Canadian Census of Marcy Allen, who we believe was Sarah's mother and living with them in Canada.
David McConaghy and Sarah Allen - Civil Registration, Belfast, Antrim, Ireland was June 3, 1854.
David (1829-1899)  Sarah (abt 1829-1908)
I have attached an Outline Report from Family TreeMaker.
I am hoping to find out where David emigrated from in Ireland.
Thanks, for any help.

Hi Mandy
I  think it is possible that David may have listed his parents on the family gravestone.  It has been known here to list the names of family members who have emigrated and died elsewhere.  There are also gravestones erected here many years after family members actual deaths by children who emigrated.

I was wondering if it would be worth your while emailing the presbyterian churches in Belfast to see if any have records of David and Sarah's marriage since we know the date, and if so enquiring if they have baptismal records for them as well. Only trouble is, there are rather a lot of Presbyterian churches in Belfast.  If you feel you would want to do that I can look them up and send you their details.
Cheers
Teri

Hi Teri,
If you could send me the church information, I will certainly e-mail or "snail mail" them.  Is there a central Belfast Presbyterian Church Archive or does each individual church keep there own records?  I know in Canada (where I live) the older records are still retained at the church level.
Where would the Civil Registration Registers be held - Registrar General (Oxford House)? Would they be able to give me any other information ie) parents' names, home address, etc. other than what is already known?
David McConaghy and Sarah Allen - Civil Registration, Belfast, Antrim, Ireland was June 3, 1854.
Would the Registrar General have info on baptisms as well.
Sorry, I seem to be asking a lot of questions!
Cheers, Mandy

Hi Mandy
The Public records office in Belfast have copies of most of the Presbyterian church records  http://www.proni.gov.uk/   but they will not look them up for you. Someone has to go in person to search.

The registration office in Belfast http://www.groni.gov.uk/ will have a record of David and Sarah's marriage as civil registration for all marriages except roman catholic began in 1845.  The records will give the names of bride and groom, their occupations, their father's names and addresses.  They dont usually give an exact age but have M for minor if under 21 and FA for full age if 21 or over.   As birth and death registration and catholic marriages did not start till 1864 only the church birth or baptism records.

Do you know what Sarah's father's name was?  This might help me with further searching.
I'll find the email addresses for as many of the Belfast churches I can and get them to you as soon as possible.  One presbyterian church - Rosemary Street has online records but I've checked them out and their not there.
Cheers
Teri

Hi Terri,
Sorry, I don't know Sarah's father's name.  I am assuming that the Marcy Allen listed on the 1881 CDN Census, is Sarah's mother.  Marcy Allen was 79 in the 1881 CDN Census, born in Ireland in 1802, and listed as Widowed.  Again, religion listed as Presbyterian.
As Sarah's last name on the Civil Registration was Allen, I guessed that Marcy Allen was her mother.  She would have been about 27 years of age when Sarah was born.
I know that one shouldn't assume anything, but it does make sense.  Marcy Allen is not listed on either the 1861 or 1871 CDN Census'. so she may have come to Canada after being widowed in Ireland.
Cheers, Mandy

Hi Mandy
I've found one record for a marriage for a James McConaghey to a Mary BUT they are both Roman Catholic:

16th Mary 1829, James McConaghey to Mary McCullion of Beauconnell in Shankill Roman Catholic Church, Craigavon, Co Down.  Witnesses: Michael McConaghey and Pat McLindon.

No ages or occupations given and only the fathers' surnames.  However, given the religion I dont suppose it's the right one!

Hi Teri,
Thanks for all the info.  I am having a LookUp done at PRONI for David and Sarah's marriage registration.  That may give me some more information to include when I contact the various Presbyterian churches.
Cheers, Mandy

Hi Mike,
Not my McConaghy unfortunately.  David and Sarah didn't come to United States until c. 1855.
Cheers, Amanda

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the info.
I am still waiting to find out Sarah Allen's parents names.  I think her mother was Marcy (or Mary) Allen, but not sure of her father's name.  I am hoping that someone can research the Belfast Civil Marriage Registration of June 3, 1854 of David McConaghy and Sarah Allen, to see if the parents' names on are listed.  Also addresses if that is possible.  I am not sure just what info is given on these Civil Marriage Registration forms.

It is confusing at times, because David's father was James Allan McConaghy and he married a Sarah ALLEN,

Cheers, Amanda
