Castle Leslie, Ireland

Most Haunted Investigation (Series 5)

castleleslie

Castle Leslie, Co Monaghon, Ireland has been in the Leslie Family for over 300 years. The present building was built in 1817 and it is now run as a successful hotel which has 14 bedrooms in total.  It has its share of famous guests; Sir Paul McCartney got married there in 2002.

Most Haunted ; Ghostly History of Castle Leslie

Norman Leslie who was an Officer in the Rifle Brigade and who was killed in France during WW1 is said to haunt the castle. A story tells of his mother who, 2 days before Norman died, saw him appear at the foot of her bed - he smiled at her then disappeared. When Norman died in 1914 he was seen standing by the sundial in the gardens by the lake by the Gamekeeper. He has also been seen by guests in the Red Room.  Norman Leslie's bedroom is one of the most haunted rooms in the castle - the bed has been seen levitating and a ghost of a white lady has also been spotted.

Sammie Leslie the present owner told of a story of one of the beds which comes from Sussex. It belonged to Sir Goddard Oxenbridge of Sussex and the story was that he ate the flesh of small children, as he believed this would make him live forever!! The local villagers of Sussex captured and killed him by cutting him in half with a sword and they threw his body into the lake. When his bed was brought to the castle guests would feel a weight pressing down on them and feel the bed moving.

I found this piece of interesting information searching online on a site called Sussex Giants;-

The Ogre of Oxenbridge
"As well as fame, certain people have attained a gigantic status through notoriety. Several people in Sussex have been given the title of ogre and accused of being baby eaters. The most famous of these is Sir Goddard (or Robert) Oxenbridge of Brede who died on the 9th of March 1487 and is interred in Brede Church with his wife Ann. He seems to be ostensibly a powerful, yet likeable person but the legends depict him as a giant who roamed the countryside eating children. As well as having a crow as a familiar, he had great strength and couldn't be killed by normal weapons. Eventually, all the children of Sussex got together (or just his heighbours depending on the story), got him drunk on an enormous vat of beer which they brewed (or drugged him) and sawed him in half with a wooden saw on a bridge called Groaning Bridge at Stubb's Lane, Brede. These stories were probably not deserved, it seems all the men so accused were Catholics during the Reformation. Sussex was noted for supporting the Reformation and the Parlimentarian movement, so those who clung to their faith were not too popular. The story seems to have continued though, with the ghost of this particular ogre haunting Brede place, perhaps bolstered by the smugglers who used the place to hide their cargo and were known to use ghost stories to scare people away from places. "

In the Long Gallery which is currently under restoration a dark figure and a misty shape have also scared people. The ghost of Lady Constance, who used to live at the castle, is seen in the Mauve Room. She makes her presence known by moving objects and opening/closing doors. She rebuilt the house in 1878 and seems to be seen whenever someone has been dying almost like she is there to show them the way to next level. Her portrait hangs on one of the walls.

Most Haunted Investigation - Initial walkabout with Yvette, Derek Acorah (DA) and Kieran O'Keefe

As they walked up the staircase DA picked up on the movement of people and their residual engergies as well as a prominent lady spirit who he thought walks around regularly and who he described as a "good soul".  They moved on to the Mauve Room and DA talked about a baby being born in this room and then described the childs mother who visits the room and that they were both very attuned to the room.  He then came up with the name of Marjorie and unbeknown to him, there was a Marjorie who was the former lady of the house who died in the Red Room in 1951. DA said she was not an active spirit, she just visits. DA then picked up on the lady downstairs who he had spoken about before and he came up with the name "Leonie" and said she feels so strongly about the house also and that she was a chain smoker. Fact: Leonie was the wife of Sir John Leslie, 2nd Baronet of Glaslough and she died in 1943. She was known to be a smoker.

At 9.10 pm DA  went into the Red Room and Sammie Leslie (the owner) also joined the team in this room.  DA said the bed in the room should not have been there and it belonged elsewhere and then told of the soul who was not happy about the bed being in the castle. DA tried to get him to say his name but the spirit did not want to communicate with Derek.  DA said there was a nobleman who objects to this other soul being here and that they counteract each other.  DA then said the name Norman.  This corresponds to Norman Leslie mentioned earlier who was killed in battle at Flanders Field during WW1.  DA further said that the spirit man who would'nt give his name is one of a group of spirit souls who used to stand around this bed in a previous place.  Next at 9.35pm to Normans Room where DA picked up the non residual energy of a man. DA then said out loud "this is where the sword belongs". DA said the spirit man was glad his sword had been returned to its rightful place.  At the beginning of the Most Haunted episode, Richard Felix told the story of how Normans sword which he used in battle when he died, was recovered a number of years later and returned to Castle Leslie. DA then said he could hear shouting and laughter from Norman with someone called Shane (fact: Shane Leslie was Normans brother who was married to Marjorie). DA said Shane was also unhappy because of the spirit man - an outsider! DA then got a name for this spirit - Oxenbridge (Sir Goddard Oxenbridge of Sussex). DA said that Norman wanted him out of the castle and back to Brede Place (which was indeed the home of Oxenbridge). DA talked about "attachment" where some spirits can travel with an object that has been moved if the feelings for that object are strong enough. DA also said that it was Oxenbridge who elevates the bed and not Norman.

Night Vigils :- Richard Felix, Derek and Vince went to the Red room. They did hear a loud bang afterwhich Richard asked out for any spirits to make themselves known. When he called out to Marjorie another noise was heard. John, Tom and Rachel went to the Long Gallery but nothing substantial occured. Kieran, Cath and Yvette stayed in Normans Room. Kieran suggested they try an experiment with the mirror that was on the wall, whereby you turn the mirror at a certain angle and then you stare into it and try to make contact with people who had passed over but this did not bear any results.  Next Kieran laid on the bed. Alhough the bed didnt move as it has done to previous guests, a clicking noise was heard by all which came from the Lamp Table by the side of the bed. Yvette caught an orb on camera and straight afterwards so did Kieran. Yvette called out to any spirits that may be with them and although  there was no response to her there was something caught on film, which looked like a black shape/shadow of a person (head and shoulders) moving across the far corner wall!!! Yvette and Cath remarked that while they were in the room they had a strong feeling that they were not alone in the room. Kieran, Yvette and Cath then joined the team in the Long Gallery, where a loud bang was heard more or less straight away. At one point Yvette asked if anyone had touched her arm as it felt like someone had, although conceeded it was possible that it was just her puffa jacket sleeve creating that sensation. Next the whole crew went to Normans room to try some "table tipping" - this is where participants circulate a table and are seated, fingertips are lightly placed on the top of the table and questions are asked to any spirits, who would then move the table. Once underway, with Yvette & crew members asking for any spirits to make contact, asking out to spirits by name, those that Derek had already made contact with, the table vibrated and moved slightly. There were mixed reactions as some crew members felt it while other did not. Next each person took it in turns to remove their hands - while the table still moved - then replace them on the table. This was to see if anyone removing their hands would make the table stop moving - but it didnt. Next the castle Owner rejoined the team as they carried out a seance. People took it in turns to ask out to any spirits and the table appeared to creak and be lifted off the floor by, they beleive, the spirit of Constance which the team found encouraging evidence. I personally remain sceptical about table tipping however.
