Types of Hauntings

There are many many types of ghosts, entities and types of hauntings that take place in numerous places all over the world.

Whether its an old house or mansion, a theatre, public house or graveyard it happens in every type of place you can imagine.

Malevolent Hauntings

This type of ghost is one that can be dangerous as it seems to be on a path to harm or inflict pain onto living people. The ghost/spirit may well be guarding its old home or else it could be a ghost/spirit who wasnt a very nice person when it was alive, ie someone with a vicious, malicious, attention seeking nature. It has been said that malevolent hauntings are caused by a ghost/spirit who wants to inflict the misery it may have felt in its previous life. Not all malevolent ghosts are there to cause harm to individuals - just prefering to make a nuisance of themselves and to bring attention to themselves by tormenting their victims. This is where poltergeist activity comes into play, where objects may be moved or thrown, doors slammed and things thrown across a room.

A Benevolent Haunting

A ghost/spirit who "looks out" for others in the land of the living. They are said to protect us and our families whether it be from day to day mishaps or even evil spirits/entities. It is usual for this type of ghost to be related in some way to the family or person they are protecting.

An Intelligent Haunting

This describes a ghost who is aware of who it is haunting and is aware of its surroundings and of living people and therefore completely aware of what it is doing. Intelligent hauntings are usually carried out by malovent entities.

Residual Hauntings

This type of haunting is where a ghost/spirit person is not aware that it is actually still here. Residual ghosts or residual energies left behind in certain places or buildings usually replay an occurance over and over. Therefore, for example, if a tragic event happened whereby someone lost their life, the residual energies of that ghost would either be felt very strongly by those in the land of the living or people can see the ghost in the same place at the same time, perhaps walking through a wall emanating sadness. Residual energies can be good, bad or sad. Its almost like someone leaving their imprint on the world. It has also been described as being like a video clip being played continuously over and over.

Benign Hauntings

A benign haunting is by an entity that is either unconcerned about the living or unaware of their presence. This type may either be an intelligent or residual haunting. Sometimes the entity does not realise it has passed over it will carry on with its way of life completely oblivious to its effect on the living, ie hearing footsteps or finding objects moved.

Poltergeist Hauntings

A spirit or ghost that manifests itself by moving around and influencing inanimate objects.  Disruptive behaviour such as raps,bumps thumps, knocks, footsteps, and bed-shaking, all without a discernible point of origin or physical reason for occurrence. Many accounts also detail objects being thrown about the room, furniture being moved, and even people being levitated.
