My Visit to Croxteth Hall I recently visited Croxteth Hall and have to say it was a really nice day out. The grounds are quite nice and the parking is free which is unusual for most great halls and mansions. But you pay something like 4.50 pp to see the hall, walled gardens and also Home Farm. When you walk up the path to the hall you are greeted by some big gates. Here's a snap taken on my mobile phone.
After a pleasant walk up to the hall you notice immediately the size of the hall and also that one side of it is painted white and from that view it looks in good condition, although when you walk around the whole of the outside of the building it isn't painted all the way around and it looks quite tatty and quite creepy in places. We visited the walled garden first and it was so beautiful and peaceful there we could have spent all day there! There were greenhouses full of plants, cactus' and also a place where they grow mushrooms. The garden is surrounded by a huge wall which houses exotic plants, beautiful flowers and a vegetable garden, along with apple and pear trees. You can see the top of the hall over the wall from the garden which did look quiet eerie. Here is another snap of some of the pretty flowers. Walking back to the hall and around it to the security entrance here are some more snaps of the hall.
On we went to take a look inside! Because of all the stories of hauntings that i have read about and seen from the Most Haunted investigation I was more than nervous and the worst bit for me was the kitchen and servants areas, as they are quite cold and sparse and also there are mannuquins set up and around the hall and when the motion detectors are set off, recordings of voices begin, which give an impression of the servants talking/cooking in the kitchen etc. I jumped repeatedly lol - i was already spooked and we had only just begun to take a look around. One of the rooms had a dummy sitting at a desk and would you beleive there was a magpie sat on its head! We had to look hard at it before we realised it was a real magpie...so we tracked down one of the caretakers to take care of it - it must of flown in through an open doorway. We then went up a floor and inside you aren't allowed to take any photo's or videos unfortunately. The rooms you are allowed in are in quite good condition but i found them creepy and they smelt musty and the mannequins I didnt really like. We visited the billiards room, dining room, a couple of bedrooms and sitting rooms which had the apparent ghost sightings in and the smell of tobacco smoke but we didnt see anything. My partner delivers to Croxteth Hall sometimes and whilst he was there this week he asked one of the caretakers if she had seen anything and she said she'd not seen anything in all her years of working there but she had heard conversations being had when there was no one else in the hall!!! We took a walk down the famous principal corridors and that to me was the spookiest part - i kept looking behind me feeling like I was being watched! Overall, the rooms you are allowed to go in (not many) are ok - there arent any bad vibes there that i picked up on although saying that i dont think i would be brave enough to go on one of the night ghost tours that they do at the hall... I was glad i went, but I didnt spot anything. Like I said there were no bad vibes but I personally felt uneasy and the atmosphere just wasn't comfortable. We heard a couple of noises that made us jump but that could be put down to creaky floorboards and creaking ceilings. There was one room which had information cards and old photos on the walls, and pictures of when the fire ripped through part of the hall - that room really was eerie... I would definately go back again for a day out on a hot summers day, as there is the gorgeous park areas to sit down on and a lovely gift shop....
