Legacy of Evil (also known as the possession of Michael D)
This film is based on true events about a married couple who are just about to start their lives together when Michael becomes possessed.

The Amityville Horror
Its still bandied about this horror film was based around the Lutz Murders. This website holds some good information.
http://www.crimelibrary.com/notorious_murders/family/amityville/6.html

White Noise
The film explores EVPs and the dead contacting loved ones through mediums such as televisions, recorders and the film actually used actual real evp recordings.

The Exorcist
The man who played Father Joseph Dyer in the Exorcist has said that the events in the film are about 80% true. He claimed there were big discrepancies between the film and the case that inspired the movie.  The case was about a boy, Ronald Hynkeler, who was possessed (not a girl as in the film) and the possession happened in a different city than depicted in the film. The possessed boy's head did not rotate 180 degrees as it did in the film but everything else apparently occurred. Ronald Hunkeler, after he was cured, went on to attend Gonzaga College High school in
Washington DC and he graduated in 1954.  He was later to become a scientist with NASA. He refuses all interviews regarding his exorcism.
Silence Of The Lambs
The James Gumb character was based on 3 real-life serial killers,
Ed Gein - who was a grave-robber and a man who murdered women so that he could make clothing out of their bodies.
Ed gein was also the inspiration for  Norman Bates as well as Leatherface in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Ted Bundy, who murdered dozens of women in the 1970s, often luring his victims by pretending he was injured with a cast on
his sarm - a technique that Gumb used in the film to lure Catherine Martin into his van.
Serial Killer Gary M Heidnik who held woman captive in a deep hole in his basement was also used as an inspiration.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose
This film is based on the true story of Anneliese Michel, a young German catholic woman from Germany who died in 1976 after unsuccessful attempts to cure her
from an alleged state of demonic possession with the use of psychotropic drugs.  A church-approved exorcism was performed on her and according to the court findings, her death was caused by the medical neglect of the priest whose care she was in.The Court accepted the version that Anneliese was epileptic, refusing to accept the idea of supernatural involvement in the case. Two priests involved in the exorcism, and her parents were found guilty of manslaughter resulting from negligence and they were sentenced which generated more controversy. Anneliese's grave is today still  a place of pilgramage for many Christians.

German director Hans-Christian Schmid launched his own treatment of Anneliese Michel's story, Requiem, around the same time in late 2006. His movie stayed very close (perhaps closer) to the real-world events and is a drama rather than a horror film.

The Town that Dreaded Sundown
This 1977 film was based on the Phantom Killer who murdered 5 people in the 1940s.

The Mothman Prophicies
Mothman is the name given to a being or creature who was spotted in west virginia between November 66 and December 67. It was seen near Sewell Mt as recent as September 07. Most people who have seen it describe it as a winged mansized creature with large reflective red eyes and large moth-like wings.  It often appeared to have no head with its eyes set into its chest.

On Nov 16 1966 two young married couples from Point Pleasant, Roger and Linda Scarberry and Steve and Mary Mallette were travelling late nigh in the scarberrys car. As they were passing a abandoned WW II TNT factory, about seven miles north from Point Pleasant, in the 2,500 acre (10 km²) McClintic Wildlife Station, when they noticed two red lights in the shadows by an old generator plant near the factory gate.

They stopped the car, and were startled to discover that the lights were actually the glowing red eyes of a large animal, "shaped like a man, but bigger, maybe six and a half or seven feet tall, with big wings folded against its back," according to Roger Scarberry. Terrified, they drove toward Route 62, where the creature chased them at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.

There is a plaque on the Mothman statue which reads:
"On a chilly, fall night in November 1966, two young couples drove into the TNT area north of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, when they realized they were not alone." Driving down the exit road, they saw the creature standing on a nearby ridge. It spread its wings and flew alongside the vehicle up to the city limits. They drove to the Mason County courthouse to alert Deputy Millard Halstead, who later said "I've known these kids all their lives. They'd never been in any trouble and they were really scared that night. I took them seriously." He then followed Roger Scarberry's car back to the secret ex-U.S. Federal bomb and missile factory, but found no trace of the strange creature. According to the book Alien Animals, by Janet and Colin Bord, a poltergeist attack on the Scarberry home occurred later that night, during which the creature was seen several times.

The following night, on November 16, several armed townspeople combed the area around the TNT plant for signs of Mothman. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Wamsley, and Mrs. Marcella Bennett, with her baby daughter Teena in tow, were in a car en-route to visit their friends, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Thomas, who lived in a bungalow among the "igloos" (concrete dome-shaped dynamite storage structures erected during WW-II) near the TNT plant. The igloos were now empty, some owned by the county, others by companies intending to use them for storage. They were heading back to their car when a figure appeared behind their parked vehicle. Mrs. Bennett said that it seemed like it had been lying down, slowly rising up from the ground, large and gray, with glowing red eyes. While Wamsley phoned the police, the creature walked onto the porch and peered in at them through the window
On November 24, four people saw the creature flying over the TNT area. On the morning of November 25, Thomas Ury, who was driving along Route 62 just north of the TNT, claimed to have seen the creature standing in a field, and then it spread its wings and flew alongside his car as he sped toward the Point Pleasant sheriff's office.

On November 26, Mrs Ruth Foster of Charleston, West Virginia reportedly saw Mothman standing on her front lawn, but the creature was gone by the time her brother-in-law went out to investigate. Further, on the morning of November 27, the creature apparently pursued a young woman near Mason, West Virginia, and was reported again in St. Albans the same night, by two children.

A Mothman sighting was again reported on January 11, 1967, and several other times that same year. Fewer sightings of the Mothman were reported after the collapse of the Silver Bridge, when 46 people died. The Silver Bridge, so named for its aluminum paint, was an eyebar chain suspension bridge that connected the cities of Point Pleasant, West Virginia and Kanauga, Ohio over the Ohio River. The bridge was built in 1928, and it collapsed on December 15, 1967. Investigation of the bridge wreckage pointed to the failure of a single eye-bar in a suspension chain due to a small manufacturing flaw.
