The Red Tent is about (hehehe) Jacob and his four wives, but it is told from the viewpoint of one of Leah's daughters, Dinah. The author is Anita Diamant. It focuses on ancient womanhood and does not spend much time on Jacob himself. She expands on the story from the Bible using what we know of history in that time period, as well as her imagination. It is a wonderful, beautiful novel, and nothing else she has written has come close. No, not everything in it is factual, but it provides great insight into the lives of women at that time. The book's popularity is reaching the status of a modern-day classic. It's been years since I read it, but I'll have to read it again.
I also recommend another book called The Preservationist, by David Maine. I believe this was his first book, so I don't know how much success you will have in finding it. It tells the story of Noah and his family. The way it is written is a bit odd, but if you can get used to it, it is really quite interesting. Have you ever imagined what it was like to live aboard a ship with all those animals, or watch all those people you knew and lived among drown, or figure out how to repopulate the earth? Noah is represented as a sort of crackpot to be revered, if you can picture it, and every family member has a very unique personality. Lots of humor in the book, too.
Hehehe, I love books, and I could go on and on and on....
