ONE DAY WINSTON Churchill was accosted by a woman...
“Mr. Churchill,?she shouted, “If you were my husband, I would poison your soup!?/FONT>
Churchill didn’t miss a beat. “Madam,?he replied, “If you were my wife, I would drink the soup!?/FONT>
Obviously neither expected that the other was capable of changing! In a marriage, a church or a friendship, there is really only one person you can change, and that is yourself. The person who enters a marriage determined to change his (or her) spouse will be as disappointed as Ted Kennedy at a John Birch convention! Rather than trying to make your spouse the right kind of person, you should endeavor to become the right kind of spouse. There is a simple way to do this, and it does not require cosmetic “enhancement.?/FONT>
Become more like Christ. The Bible is full of suggestions on how to become a better person. If we can’t “turn the other cheek?to our beloved husband or wife, who can we turn the other cheek to (Matthew 6:39)? We can be “kind and tender hearted?to our marriage partner, and we can “forgive?them, “as the Lord forgave?us (Ephesians 4:32). We can learn not to be “rude and self seeking?around them (1 Corinthians 13:5).
In a word, if we are not Christian in our homes, then we are not Christians anywhere. You don’t have to drink the toxic tomato soup! You don’t have to make it, either. Don’t let it simmer; don’t let it boil over. Make it wholesome and hearty! (Stan Mitchell)
