FOR 3 MONTHS I had a ringside seat �?or should I say a bird’s-eye view �?of God’s amazing handiwork...

Ninety feet above the floor of Norfolk Botanical Garden, workers installed a webcam focused on the nest of a family of bald eagles, and online viewers were allowed to watch.

When the eggs hatched, Mama and Papa Eagle were attentive to their offspring, taking turns hunting for food and guarding the nest. But one day when the eaglets still looked like fuzzballs with beaks, both parents disappeared. I worried that harm had come to them.

My concern was unfounded. The webcam operator enlarged the camera angle, and there was Mama Eagle perched on a nearby branch.

As I pondered this “reframed�?picture, I thought of times when I have feared that God had abandoned me. The view in the forest heights of Virginia reminded me that my vision is limited. I see only a small part of the entire scene.

Moses used eagle imagery to describe God. As eagles carry their young, God carries His people (Deut. 32:11-12). Despite how it may seem, the Lord “is not far from each one of us�?(Acts 17:27). This is true even when we feel abandoned. (Julie Ackerman Link)

Lunch time... but whose lunch? That is the question.

The talons of an American Bald Eagle are strong enough to crush the bones in a man's wrist (one reason why they aren't good for falconry). The largest populations of the American Bald Eagle are found all along the British Columbia coastline where they make their homes and nest before flying further south; but we also have them here, in Northern Alberta, as well as Ospreys and Golden Eagles. I was once at an aviary at the Calgary Zoo where all sorts of birds of prey are displayed and live lectures are delivered on the habitat and habits of these majestic creatures. This is where I learned what an eagle can do to a man's wrist. I've fed many an American Bald Eagle while ice fishing toward the spring. They usually make an appearance before the Canada geese return. I would imagine the fish police aren't that impressed with this but I would rather toss a small, under-sized fish (more likely to die than survive) to an eagle than put it back down the hole to pollute the water. To watch them swoop down with their great wing-spans and pick a mature sucker or ling off the ice is truly a spectacle to witness. They are indeed powerful birds. Ospreys are considerably more endangered than these great eagles and equally fascinating. When I was doing electrical work in the oil field we would put large tires up on top of poles so they would nest in some of the more secluded areas. Sometimes they would comply, but usually they would just move on. Ospreys are particularly sensitive to the presence of human beings and all conditions have to be met before they will start nesting.

I love the Canadian North and I see the handiwork of GOD wherever I go up here. The woods are my cathedral and many of my best prayers are lifted up to my Maker in these secluded areas. I miss living on the outskirts of town and hope that one day I'll be back out on my daughter's acreage again to live out the rest of my days, GOD willing.
