Slavery is alive and well in the world. Suprisingly there are more slaves in the world today than ever in history. Africa is among the leading nations in the slave trade. Today I can still go to Africa and buy two slaves for 30 U.S. dollars. (CBC RADIO) I would have full say over all that they did and the option of terminating them if I so desired, for any reason whatsoever.
Last year a man on CBC RADIO went to Africa and attempted to buy some slaves. It did not take him very long to be successful. He purchased them and brought them back to Canada as permanent residents. Needless to say they are hoping to become citizens. The purpose of this man's exploit was to prove to Canadians that the slave market is healthy and booming. North Americans would do well to keep in mind that just because slavery is "illegal" in most countries does not mean that it isn't popular. Most of the war on slavery is merely reduced to a pulp fiction in these countries. Whether underground or otherwise there is a thriving market in slaves and in slave labor.
Regardless of what UN may say the slave trade continues, whether "official" or not - especially in the third world countries. Although it may not be so openly recognized these victims still respond the same way to their slave masters in the ancient customs of slaves and they still believe that their owners hold both the authority and the unmitigated right to take their lives. They realize that they have been purchased but they feel they have little choice when they are starving to death and their self-worth is next to nill. This was once known as the slave mentality.
I listened to many interviews with slaves on the radio and many of the things they stated were shocking to me. In North America we still sit pretty and reasonably comfortable while we offer our arm chair criticisms of World events. Few consider where their shoes were purchased or what slaves made them in some sweat shop for the Fat Cat Merchants in the process of signing away their lives in the false hope of a better future.
The war on slavery has practically been replaced by a spurious war on terrorism. This declared war on terrorism is vast becoming a distraction to many of the crimes taking place in our world today (and in our own back yards) that we so rarely hear about in the media. North America wreaks from the stench of blood money.
