ASKING FOR FORGIVENESS IS CALLED CONFESSION. WHAT GOOD IS IT TO CONFESS AND BE FORGIVEN IF ONE HAS NO INTENTION OF TURNING AWAY FROM SIN?
ANOTHER THING TO CONSIDER IS THE FACT THAT THERE ARE TWO CONCEPTS OF SIN BEING DEALT WITH IN THE SCRIPTURES.
1JN 3:4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.
THE FIRST CONCEPT IS INDIVIDUAL SINS. THIS WOULD BE STEALING, ADULTERY, MURDER, ETC. IT IS FOUND IN EACH SINFUL ACTION.
THE SECOND CONCEPT OF SIN IS A LIFESTYLE. THIS IS THE SINFUL NATURE, OR FLESH. ''LAWLESSNESS'' MEANS 'THE STATE OF BEING LAWLESS.' ''LAWLESS'' MEANS 'WITHOUT LAW.' THE STATE OF BEING WITHOUT LAW IS ADDRESSED HERE:
RO 8:3 For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit. Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
IT IS THE CONDEMNATION OF THE 'STATE OF BEING WITHOUT LAW' THAT MAKES IT POSSIBLE FOR MAN TO MEET THE RIGHTEOUS REQUIREMENTS OF THE LAW OF GOD. WE FIND THAT CONDEMNATION CARRIED OUT HERE:
GAL 5:16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
IN THIS WAY, THE HOLY SPIRIT LEADS US TO CRUCIFY THE SINFUL NATURE AND LEAD HOLY AND RIGHTEOUS LIVES.
