It would appear that the term "RELIGION" actually occurs ONLY FOUR TIMES in the NEW TESTAMENT in the GREEK.

WHAT IS PURE RELIGION?

WE HAVE THREE INSTANCES WHERE THE WORD THRESKEIA IS USED OF MAN'S RELIGION:

AC 26:5 Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

COL 2:18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

JA 1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

THEN, WE HAVE THE ONE INSTANCE WHERE IT IS USED OF THE BELIEF IN GOD:

JA 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

THIS IS THE ''RELIGIOUS WORSHIP, EXTERNAL, THAT WHICH CONSISTS OF CEREMONIES, ETC.''

QUESTION TO YOU:  WHAT DOES THIS MEAN....''TO VISIT THE FATHERLESS AND WIDOWS IN THEIR AFFLICTION?''

Friend, I have seen this word, "threskeia" before and wondered upon it also. It's just another one of those loose ends for me... One of those little grains of sand that get into my shoe from time to time. I brought it up here in the group once and never once received a response. You were the first.

How interesting that while I play The Fatherless and the Widowed, a song, which my one year old daughter handed to me on cd ten minutes ago, that I should happen upon this post of yours... I will be honest...When I first read this scripture I thought it meant to console those families who were grieving for the loss of a father who passed on; but there must be something more to it than this eventhough I readily admit that afflictions can be very grievous indeed. I mean, this is supposed to be PURE RELIGION and it is the only place in the HOLY BIBLE where I read this term: PURE RELIGION.

Surely PURE RELIGION is important. I've been waiting for a response on this link for over a year.

Thankyou

Here is another link I posted under another email addy (which I use for more technical purposes for the most part). No one touched it either:

PURE RELIGION : HOW IMPORTANT CAN IT BE?
I suppose people think that as long as she has her pittance from the government we need not concern ourselves with the welfare of the widows and the fatherless; but that's not what GOD says.

I suppose people think that as long as she has her pittance from the government we need not concern ourselves with the welfare of the widows and the fatherless; but that's not what GOD says.

FOR A LONG TIME, I THOUGHT GOD MEANT FOR HIS PEOPLE TO CARE FOR ACTUAL WIDOWS AND ORPHANS. NOW, I KNOW THAT IS NOT WHAT IS MEANT BY ''WIDOWS'' AND ''ORPHANS'' IN THE SCRIPTURES.  I CAME ACROSS THE MEANING OF ''WIDOWS'' AND ''ORPHANS.''  HERE IS WHAT ''ORPHAN'' AND ''WIDOW'' MEANS TO ME:

DT 10:17 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing. And you are to love those who are aliens, for you yourselves were aliens in Egypt.

AS WE SEE, ANYONE WHO IS AN ALIEN, WHERE GOD IS CONCERNED, IS AN ORPHAN IN GOD'S EYES. THAT WOULD BE ANYONE WHO DOES NOT KNOW GOD.

WE FIND THIS MEANING APPARENT IN A PARABLE OF THE CHRIST:

LK 18:2 He said: "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.' For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or care about men, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!' And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"

HERE IS THE PROMISE OF THE CHRIST:

JN 14:18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.

ORPHANS AND WIDOWS ARE PEOPLE WHO DO NOT KNOW THE LORD. AS BELIEVERS, WE ARE TO LOOK AFTER WIDOWS AND ORPHANS IN THEIR DISTRESS BY PREACHING THE WORD OF GOD TIRELESSLY, THAT THEY MAY FIND COMFORT IN THE ARMS OF THE CHRIST.

JA 1:27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

THAT IS ''PURE AND FAULTLESS'' RELIGION. PAUL SAYS THE SAME THING THIS WAY:

2TI 4:1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage?U>with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
