Hi Folks;

Well since I'm gonna have to be off-line most of tomorrow (and poss. Friday), I'm posting the Brainstorming message today to take effect tomorrow.

There's no doubt that we've given Carol more than enough data to chew on--the search for Nels, et al., has been a roaring success! So it's time to move on. This week we tackle Katy's brickwall "JOHNSON, WOOD" posted on 5 Dec 2002. A gist of Katy's posting follows:
G-G-Grandfather: (J.) Harvey JOHNSON,
b. 1829 prob. Canada but parents were from DE
Located: in IL, towns of Prairie City and/or Tennessee in McDonough Co., from 1855 to 1870
Spouse: Rebecca J. WOOD

G-G-Grandmother: Rebecca J. WOOD,
b. 1837 PA/OH
Family is from PA/OH/TN
Located: in IL, towns of Prairie City and/or Tennessee in McDonough Co., from 1855 to 1870

Child
Mary Francis JOHNSON (Katy's g-grandmother)
b. 1861 in town of Tennessee, McDonough Co. IL.
m. Harvey (lnu) Fayette Co. OH
Location: Fremont NE, where they are buried.

Katy is looking for relatives who may have moved to NE w/ them. Possibly a James L WOOD, or another JOHNSON. They may have had something to do with Pawnee Indians, she's not sure. She's not sure if there are relatives that stayed in McDonough, or nearby counties, since most moved with relatives.

Melody responded this past week with: "From information I found in 1860 Mc Donough County, the Prairie City Johnsons came from New York, not Delaware and it seems the Johnson/Johnston family in Tennessee Township came from Virginia.

Katy, do you have anything to add in light of what Mel has found?

*****
Next week is Ray's brickwall, appropriately entitled" Brickwall" and posted on 12/6/2002. He's looking for data on his g-g-grandparents SCHWAB/LEE and g-g-grandparents LEE/WELLS, and their families. A gist of Ray's data follows:

G-g-grandfather: Emil SCHWAB b. June 17, 1873 Illinois
G-g-grandmother: Carrie L. LEE b. June 30, 1879 Bureau county Illinois--GGrand Mother
Married: Princeton, Bureau county April 4 1900 (he has the marriage certificate).

Carrie's parents:
G-g-g-grandfather: George Henry Lee b. Rhode Island
G-g-g-grandmother: Lucy Almira WELLS b. Illinois

Misc:
1) George Henry LEE served with Company F 57 Regiment Illinois Infantry.
2) Emil and Carrie SCHWAB moved to CA prior to 1913--needs info on family prior to move west..

Ray, do you want to update this data?

*****
Cheers, Wayne

Maybe contacting the Stephenson County Historical Society will provide you with a clue to your connection.

stepmother of Abraham Lincoln
Born: 12/13/1788
Birthplace: Hardin County, Ky.

Sarah Bush grew up in Elizabethtown, Ky., one of nine children of Christopher and Hanna Bush. In 1806 she married Daniel Johnston, who was later appointed jailer of Hardin County. Together they had three children, Elizabeth, Matilda, and John. Following her husband's death in 1816, Sarah Johnston moved her children into a cabin she had purchased. It was there that Thomas Lincoln sought her out a year after the death of his first wife, Nancy Hanks, in 1818. The two had known each other in Elizabethtown before their respective marriages, and after Thomas paid a few of her debts, the two were married on Dec. 2, 1819.

Sarah and her children traveled back to Indiana with Thomas Lincoln, and she became a warm and devoted mother to his two children Sarah, 12, and Abraham, 10. Although illiterate herself, she encouraged young Abe in his studies. The Lincoln family remained in Indiana until 1830, when they moved on to Illinois, eventually settling in present-day Coles County. Although Abraham Lincoln went off on his own in 1831, he returned to visit his stepmother periodically.

Sarah Bush Lincoln remained energetic throughout her long life. She outlived her second husband by nearly 20 years and was buried next to him at Shiloh Church near Farmington, Ill., after her death.

Died: 4/12/1869

Since Sarah Bush's other two children were girls...would John be your connection?

Since it is now officially the end of my brainstorming week, i too would like to thank everyone for their time, help, and kindness. I knew it was going to be a hard task since the last names i am searching are so common, as wayne pointed out, but everyone tryed anyway, and i actually have some ideas to go forward on. The harvey johnson family i am researching only lived in Mcdonough county for app 15 years, and only 2 to 3 of their children survived, and one of those never married, so i knew it would be a challenge. And again as wayne noted, they moved around a lot. Well again, i really want to express my gratitude to you all. thanks thanks thanks katy from louisiana.

Katy,
Since I received so much help last week, maybe it is my turn to return the favor.  My great grandfather Frank Shreve on my father's side made the 1893 Oklahoma Land Run. (This was the last Land Run)  He started the run at Hennessey, OK and settled just south of Lahoma.  I have made several trips to Enid, Ames, Fairview, etc. researching this family. If your ancestor settled in Woods or Major County, I may be able to help.  There were 7 starting locations for that run, and each location has its own records.  The Oklahoma Historical Society has information for all seven.  The participants had to register before the Run, and those registration papers are held at the National Archives.  Then after they homesteaded, they registered their claim and had to have 5 witness affidavits.  The county boundry lines changed at statehood in 1907, so that confuses things a bit.  It was called the Cherokee Outlet before the run because it was the outlet owned by the  Cherokee Tribe.  They used it to access hunting grounds to the west.  It was leased to ranchers, and was opened to settlement with much controversy.

This site gives county name changes:

I have a map of Major/Woods county in 1900 which shows land ownership.  I will locate it and post it later.

Okie, thanks so much for the information. My ggrandparents forest and mary morse started at huneywell kansas, and the land they claimed was near tonkawa in kay county. We have visited the gravesite near the church that was started near a settlement. it is riverview cemetery. My aunt and I went to Ponca city last year, and the historian there said they destroyed the documents because they ran out of space. but i am going to check into these sites . The historian in ponca city suggested the enid museum, as he said they were very helpful with trying to find the correct land, which we have not yet been able to do. By the way, forest morse died in wood county, so it must by pretty close to kay. Off the subject, my grandmother wrote a letter to all of us on her 80th birhtday , telling us of her life in early oklahoma. She was not born until 1901. but it was a wonderful and historic letter. Again, I must thank all, everyone has just been wonderful.  thanks thanks thanks thanks
