Hi Folks;
Well I think we at least made some dents in Gail's wall so its time to move on. Since there is apparently no longer a Member Search option on IKK (part of MSN's upgrade I suspect). it becomes more difficult to formulate these messages, so I'm dropping back from 3 brickwalls to 2 on each Brainstorming message.
Our featured contestant for this week is Okie (aka Carol) with FOSSEDAL/SHOGREN, originally posted on 17 Nov. 2002. A gist of Carol's combined postings follows: G-Grandfather: Neils/Nels Fossedal/ (var. Fossedel, Fossedahl, nee ANDERSON, var. ANDERSSON) b. 27 Jun 1856 Voss Norway, d. 7 Dec 1926 Cook Co. Hospital, bur. 11 Dec 1926 "M. Ohio??"--may not be an M, or could be Mt., but is pretty sure it says Ohio. Trade: Carpenter--had his own business in Chicago, also worked at Sampson Tractor Co. in Janesville. Immigrated: 1882, Naturalized: 1892 Notes: FOSSEDAL was a name Nels made up when he came to the US. His real name was Nels ANDERSON.
G-Grandmother: Inga SHOGREN (var. SJOGREN) b. ???? Sweden, d. Nekoosa WI Sep 1915 bur. ???, WI Children: Arthur b. 1903, Chicago--Arthur worked at the Sampson Tractor Factory in Janesville WI in 1920
Mildred Catherine FOSSEDAL b.1905 Janesville, WI d. ???? OK Notes: This is Carol's grandmother, she left her family in the early 20's to go to Rockford IL w/ John MISKELLY, whom she later married. MISKELLY left a wife and family in Janesville. They moved to OK in 1928.
Elmer b. 1908, Chicago
Walter b. 1910, Chicago
Helen b. 1908, Chicago, m. (fnu) Skelly
Robert b. prob. June 1915 Nekoosa WI--adopted upon Inga's death by the HANSEN family of Nekoosa. He was a Chicago fireman & m. Lillian (lnu)
Notes: Carol has the DOD of all of her grandmother's siblings. The family moved from WI to Chicago & then back again after Nels lost his business. Their house in Nekoosa burned down in Dec 1915 and all of the kids were farmed out. In 1920 they were all in Janesville, WI. They also resided in Port Edwards Village, Wood Co., WI at one time. In 1930, two of them worked for the Merrick Dairy in Janesville.
Carol's brickwalls follow: 1) she can't go further back than Nels & Inga, 2) she needs 1910 census for Nels & Inga FOSSEDAL, in Chicago. 3) she needs 1900 census for Nels & Inga ANDERSON or FOSSEDAL in Chicago 4) she needs to know where Nels is buried--doesn't believe there is a headstone for Nels, 5) exact date of death for Inga
"If ANYONE has any other ideas, I will take them and RUN with them, and I am very grateful to all IKK brainstormers. You guys are great"
***** Next week will be Katy with JOHNSON, WOOD posted on 5 Dec 2002. Katy has sent me an update since last week's posting so you Brainstormers need to read it again. A gist of Katy's posting follows: G-G-Grandfather: Harvey JOHNSON, possibly J. Harvey, b. 1829 prob. Canada but parents were from DE Located: in IL, towns of Prairie City and/or Tennessee in McDonough Co., from 1855 to 1870 Spouse: Rebecca J. WOOD
G-G-Grandmother: Rebecca J. WOOD, b. 1837 PA/OH Family is from PA/OH/TN Located: in IL, towns of Prairie City and/or Tennessee in McDonough Co., from 1855 to 1870
Child Mary Francis JOHNSON (Katy's g-grandmother) b. 1861 in town of Tennessee, McDonough Co. IL. m. Harvey (lnu) Fayette Co. OH Location: Fremont NE, where they are buried.
Katy is looking for relatives who may have moved to NE w/ them. Possibly a James L WOOD, or another JOHNSON. They may have had something to do with Pawnee Indians, she's not sure. She's not sure if there are relatives that stayed in McDonough, or nearby counties, since most moved with relatives.
***** Cheers, Wayne |

Cragin A fairly large neighborhood with an array of residential styles and shopping opportunities, Cragin is bounded to the north by Roscoe Street, to the south by Fullerton Avenue (from Central to Laramie) and the SOO Line train tracks (from Laramie to Cicero), to the east by Cicero Avenue and to the west by Central Avenue (from Roscoe Street to Fullerton Avenue) and Laramie Avenue (from Fullerton to the SOO Line train tracks). pictures of the neighborhood http://www.picturingchicago.com/Cragin.htm |

Katy, From information I found in 1860 Mc Donough County, the Prairie City Johnsons came from New York, not Delaware and it seems the Johnson/Johnston family in Tennessee Township came from Virginia. Melody |

Carol;
Did you notice that in the 1910 census they lived at 3919 N. 52nd--the only house listed on 52nd? Around the block was Christian Ellerbrock--one of the allied families married into the Jaaks/Jaacks. There's a good bet that Nels knew my g-g-grandfather Hermann Jaaks. Not exac tly a cousin-connect, but it does mean that a number of IKK had ancestros in the same neighborhood or at least in the same community area. Small world ain't it?
Also, I now understand why I couldn't find him in the indx on Genealogy or HQ--the handwriting makes it look like Fersdal or Tersdal, and the indexer for HQ read it as Tessedal.

Hi Carol;
I saw your query on COOK-IL-List and did some searching. There are 19 Obits and an article for the name Miskelly in the Trib archives--you need to try to access this site. There were also a number of Miskellys listed in the directories on AncestryPlus--see below. Cheers, Wayne

Wayne,
That was a good find on the Fossdahls. I tried to help out and had just a bad of luck. It's amazing how people write the surnames as they sound like the spelling Tessdal. I would have never in my whole life have figured that out by using a another letter. I was trying to figure out possible spellings using F not T. Good Job Wayne. Right Carol?

Wayne,
This is from you earlier: The birthdate
is not the same, but everything else works: (I'm not sure Nels knew when he was
born!)
1900 Census, IL, Cook Co.,
Twp: West Town, Chicago, Ward 7, ED 541, Sheet 14A, Page 215, Roll 267, Book
2, 18 June 1900, Address: 62 West Sharon
St.--Boarding w/ John G. Olsen Anderson N.
Fossedahl, Boarder, W, M, May 1860, 40, S, NO, NO, NO,
Showcase-maker.
I won't throw it out - especially the first name and middle
initial AND the occupation, but if I were going to search the 1900 census
in this same neighborhood as 1910, where might I look? I would love to
find Inga living at home with her PARENTS whom I can't prove
existed!!
Is the above address in that area? I have been looking
at mapquest, but this Okie hasn't even visited Chicago.

Wayne and Carol, I think Nels knew when he was born (realize you were kidding, Wayne). My guess he was hiding information from the authorities, not his wife. Could he have been a stowaway? It happened, and I've heard a number of stories. I would think he'd be looking over his shoulder every time he had to give information. AND there is no indication that he came over and/or lived with anyone with the same surname. However, rather than using his real name, he took on the name of the Fossedal farm area where if anyone from there wished to find him, they might be able to do so. The old Fox. Melody |

Hi Carol;
First of all, that's Ward 17, not 7--need to clean the contacts on my keyboard. Secondly, my opinion, this is most certainly him--he was still playing around with the name.
BTW, there are gobs of Shogrens and Sjogrens indexed for Chicago in 1900--any thoughts on what her parents' given names were?
Here's the data you requested plus a map. Cheers, Wayne Ward 17--1900 EDs 536 - 551 Chicago City

At a quick glance, some lived on some of those streets from
the map you sent me.
One thing that may narrow this down is Inga lists
Norway, rather than Sweden, as her place of birth in 1910
census, so maybe Ruth could check the Norway farms located in the Sogn og
Fjordane region of Norway in 1886 for this surname. (It looks
like most of those with this surname are from Sweden.)
Thanks to everyone who has taken this family on as their own
during this week. (If we have a family reunion with all our "lost"
cousins, we will have to invite Melody, as she is practically a member of the
family now.) And Wayne, you have pointed me in the right direction many
times - especailly the Cook County list.
And to the administrators of this IKK site, Janie, Maggie,
DeeAnn, thank you for your many hours spent keeping it up and running so these
success stories can continue. Much appreciation to you.
Carol
