Friday May 4th found the Palace of Auburn Hills filled, not with Detroit Pistons Fans, with fans ready to hear the timeless crooning of Billy Joel. There were few empty seats, and as Joel took the stage, the roar of the crowd sealed it: we were in for a good time!
An artist like Joel has too many hits to sing all at once, but he gave it a good effort. He reached back to 1971, to his Cold Spring Harbor album to sing Everybody Loves You Now. From his 1975 album Streetlights he resurrected the favorite The Entertainer, and the crowd was singing right along. The set included other favorites:
For the Detroit crowd, he even sang Chauncey Billups's song Big Shot, and all the basketball fans went wild! He sang for nearly three hours only taking a break for two songs while different members of the band sang Dancin' in the Streets, and Highway to Hell. After a full night, Joel gave the perfect encore: Italian Restaurant and Only the Good Die Young.
When he left the stage at nearly 11:00 pm, the Piano Man had given us the best of his songs, and he left us feelin' all right.
