NO I'm not selling anything! This is free information for anyone who would like to make a little extra fun money. I started out buying a soy wax candle kit on ebay, thinking it would be fun to do a little craft project with Liam. There are lot of them listed. Anyway, I bought the kit for about $20.00 total including shipping and Liam and I made up a few candles. You don't need any special equiptment because the soy wax cleans up with soap and water and you can make in your microwave - don't have to use a double-boiler or anything like that. I just use a Pyrex measuring cup (large size one) and candy thermometer. Oh, and some chopsticks to keep the wicks straight while they harden. The kit came with all the instructions and supplies outside of a couple of jelly jars or what have you to use as containers. (You can buy those at Walmart, you can find the jelly jars at the grocery store too). Long story short, we kept one, gave the rest away as gifts. I liked making them so much that I bought another, larger kit for about $28.00 including shipping. I sold all of the candles I made for $160.00 Total cost for that batch, including buying jelly jars, was around $40.00 and $120.00 pure profit. Bonus: it makes your house smell SO GOOD when you're pouring candles too . I quit buying ebay kits and started buying directly from candle supply companies online - the ones I use most are www.bittercreek.com and www.candlescience.com they are both excellent companies with fair prices. I think candle science is a little faster with shipping though. I feel like I should share this idea as there are many of us in need of just a little extra and this is something that is fun and profitable that you can do at home. Liam sells them to his teachers at school, I sell them to my friends at work and get more orders from them too. Liam has sold a few of them door-to-door when he wanted extra money to buy some shoes he wanted. They always go quickly and it's coming up on Christmas - they make great little inexpensive gifts also. Jose and Liam are selling a few candles today so that we can have the extra money to see the new Zorro movie tonight. I make and sell them as my time permits, which is nice and keeps it more of a profitable hobby than business, since I work full time anyway. If anyone wants any more info, I'm learning as I go but will be glad to help if I can. I hope this helps someone out. Shelter |

I just saw on tv this morning that if you store your pilar type candles (the kind without glass containers) in the freezer and then take them out when you decide to burn them, the freezer makes the candle burn LONGER which is great. I am not sure if you should try it with a glass container candle though as it might crack the glass. I love candles anyways, especially the scented ones! That's a neat idea about making your own though, Shelter! Thanks. When my scented ones in the glass jars get down to the lower section, I've often remelted them and even added more wax from other candles that have burned down to that last inch, making a whole new candle with my adding more wick. When they get down low like that they do tend to get a smokey film on the upper parts of the glass that you need to clean off though, or just run out of wick, yet the sides have extra wax left over which is why I make a new candle from the remains. Blessings, Lilly |

That's another reason I love using soy wax - there is NO black soot build up on the container walls, ever. I have a friend at work who has her family giving her all their candle leavings or ends - "leftovers"? She melts them all down and makes new candles from them too. There are candle heater-plates (don't know what they are actually called) you can buy at Walmart for $5.00 to melt leftovers in containers - strain the wax through a cheese cloth to get the match sticks/burned up wick out of it. I remember making little candles out of milk cartons when I was a kid - take a small candle and stand in the middle of the carton then put ice cubes around it to keep it in place. Then pour the melted wax into the carton right over the ice. The ice makes it look lacey as it hardens- really quite pretty! |

some candles I just cannot let go of. So I have a trick for replacing a "lost wick" in an old, or recycled candle. Push a screwdriver down into the wax, and place a birthday cake candle down in the hole. |

Hi, Just read this today and it sounds like a wonderful idea for my daughter to make extra money. She is 14 and is always wanting to find a way to make some money to save for when she gets her license to drive to pay for insurance and gas. (Thank goodness she is thinking ahead.) Are you still making and selling the candles? Thanks for the idea!! Sandy |

Hi Sandy! I haven't made them lately, since we're remodelling the house and all my candle stuff is packed away for the moment. I need to make some more though, because I'm getting low on candles MYSELF . This could easily be done by a 14 year old and sold door to door or even to parents and teachers at school. If I can help at all, just say the word! Shelter |

This sounds like a great idea, except I couldnt sell water to a man dying of thirst...lol I just wanted to add my two cents in here if I can. I think the jars you were talking about are the Bell jars that you buy at the grocery store to do home canning and if it is then you can freeze them. Just make sure the wax and jar come back to room temperature before placing them in the freezer. I have done a bit of canning and put them in the freezer. Although hot wax on a cold jar might not be a good thing. I'll have to try it out. Hugs & Prayers, PnkDragn |

This candle making sounds really fun. I've grown my own fruit plants and decorated the pots I put them in. Lately I've been wanting to do something different that isn't too tough to handle. I love candles and everyone that I know does too, so this sounds like a great idea or at least a hobby to keep me busy. Thanks for the interesting idea, I'll let you know how it turns out. Keiko |
