To use the smoke from burning herbs or incense to cleanse negative energy. It's a Native American term, and white sage or Sweetgrass are typically used. A bundle of these herbs is called a 'smudge stick'.   Lighting Your Smudge Stick
To use your Smudge Stick, light the tip with a match or lighter, blow out the flame and allow to smolder. If your Smudge Stick does not light easily open out the tip of the bound herbs and blow on it as it smoulders.   Smudging A Person
You can smudge yourself or have someone perform the smudging for you. Smudging is a personal ceremony in itself and differs for each person as to how it is done. Generally smudging can be done by waving the stick from side to side, feet to head and from front to back of the body.   Smudging A Room
To cleanse or purify a room wave the Smudge Stick in each corner of the room. Once finished open the doors and windows. Alternatively you can cut a small amount off one end of the Smudge Stick, place this in a heatproof bowl, light it and leave it to smolder in the room you wish to smudge. Once it has burned right down open the windows.   To extinguish your Smudge Stick simply rub it in the earth or some sand.   How to smudge yourself:  Put the smudge stick to flame using a match or candle light. Blow or wave the flame with your hand to put out the fire. Allow the smudge stick to smolder, freeing the smoke to circle in the air. Fan the swirls of smoke around your body's aura from head to toe.
