Laeradh (Original Message) | Sent: 5/9/2003 9:42 PM | I'd previously been using an essential oil/potpourri diffuser with my incense, but today I tried using self-ignting charcoal instead. It was difficult to light and there were sparks at first, then I put a large pinch of incense on top...and all I could smell was still the charcoal. They're not big enough to put much more incense on top; is there something I'm doing wrong? (And here's hoping MSN will let me actually read any replies through e-mail...sigh...) ~Laeradh

merry meet Laeradh...i have some of those as well...here is the problem with the charcoal...when you light it you have to wait until it has been completely lit beofre you add anything to it...when it turns grey all over and quits sparking is when you should add the incense, oil or resin...these do cause the incense to burn up quicker...i have found that it's better to use herbs or resins with these...the charcoal burns the incense from the bottom up so they do go quicker...if you want to try it again just wait until the charcoal has stopped sparking and is not red hot...i had better luck with it using it that way...depending on the size you should wait about 10 or 15 minutes before setting the incense on the coal...anyway, that's what worked for me. Thanks, LadyBeast! I'll have to try again soon; I just bought a lot of resins so I figured it was a good time to experiment with this method.

merry meet Laeradh...you're most welcome...resins will do very well in there...there will be a little smoke with it...what i like to do with my resins is crush them up with my mortar and pestle and put them in my diffuser...that way there's no smoke and you can burn them for several days at a time and still get the same wonderful scent...my favorites are franckincense and myrrh...it's a very nice combination...have fun! I prefer to use the loose herbs or resin with the self igniting. Though I have noticed that loose incense made for me by friends compared to the store bought ones work better.

Try this.... Home made Charcoal Disk Recipe
You use about 9 cubes to make about 40 discs (Solitary Size) They are used when loose incense is burned on top of them. You can burn the incense on a thin circle of foil
So the ingredients are: Charcoal, Saltpetre, Traganth, Water
Charcoal Is to be crushed then powdered is regular BBQ briquettes. You can use a coffee grinder if you have one or food processor. You need a hammer a hard surface and a bowl. You crush the charcoal as much as you can then you transfer it into a coffee grinder or food processor to powder it.
you can scale down if you want but I make it in bulk so its an eye hands experimentation thing.
Traganth is a gum. You can get that in powder form at a scientific supply store or you can order it from Tandy Leather Company for cheaper. Traganth is spend but it's cheaper than lot of other gums on the market.
You get a cup of hot water mix it with 1/2 teaspoon of the traganth. The water is supposed to be hot to melt the traganth into it and it (Just like cornstarch heat and water thickens.) Set that aside in a metal or glass bowl.
You can make them in about 30 mins and then you can let them air dry. I bake mine at a low heat if I want them to dry quicker but I keep an eye on them so they don't over cook. After the charcoal is in fine powder form you can mix the traganth mix into the charcoal. You don't want the mix to be too wet the traganth mix is to saturate the charcoal in order for it to stick together again.
Saltpetre is added to the mixture I would say 1 tablespoon you can get it at a scientific supply store or behind the counter at a pharmacy. Salt Petre is also known as Potassium Nitrate it is used as a combustible agent. In charcoal discs from the store ignite and sputter from the Saltpetre as it starts to burn.
In case the Pharmacy asks you what you are using it for. Tell Them Incense.
Then You mix the Saltpetre into the charcoal mix. Then you can use molds or syrup lids or olive oil lids something round our shaped in the form you want it. Make your charcoals.
You can use a marble to make the indentation into the charcoals evenly. so the herbs stay in place. Then You place the raw charcoal on a flat surface somewhere in the house to air dry. Use a spatula and Put it in an air dry Container. Then You place the raw charcoal on a flat surface somewhere in the house to air dry. Use a spatula and Put it in an air dry container. Silica packets are great with keeping incense dry.
You Match the charcoal. Light it. You might need to provoke it to light. IM sure you know how some charcoals don't always light. When it Turns grey it is ready to add an herb a sap or whatever is to be burned.
