Greetings, this is a subject which has been bothering me for a while now, since I spoke with a friend and mentioned that I don't have a public Craft name; in rituals when I'm with someone else, I sometimes use a chunk of my private Craft name (dropping a syllable); in the local pagan community, I'm mostly known as Wisdom Stone or simply Wisdom, my MSN nick, or my actual last name, Abbadie. He (a high priest, so his opinion is GOT to count) simply said, "nicks are public craft names". Now, the way they are used, I can't argue with that; but I've read for example that Silver RavenWolf added the Wolf part to her public name at a rite of passage or sdomething of the sort; my friend's teacher told me that the second half of her public name was given to her by her own teacher. What I mean is, public Craft names are, according to the impression I had, meaningful names, carefully chosen; my nick, on the other hand, sounds okay for a witch for sure, but it's actually a simple adaptation of the name of a comic book character I used to feel identified with because he was uncanilly like me in several respects. Something personal, pehaps, but hardly witchy or spiritual. ¿Can that make the transition from nick to public craft name? Am I giving too much importance to public names? It's just I can't get that old joke out of my mind, thast you can tell when somebody is a cyber-pagan when their Craft name and their nick are one and the same! I'd like to know what you people think about this... Blessed Be, Wisdom... (feels weird signing like this after what I said! LOL) |

I never thought much about this! I live in a place where no one knows of my beliefs lol, I don't go around calling myself Skyblue Saille so I guess that old joke is on me lol! I do feel that the name you use in ritual is between you and the Goddess/God but your public name well if you identify yourself with it and it fits your path, your going to use it in public as well as on the internet, it's your name right :) Bright blessings |

greetings WisdomStone...i apologize for missing this yesterday...it's back to school getting ready time and i just down right missed this one...as far as your question goes...my craft name is LadyBeast...i just chose it as a screen name many years ago as no one else around had it (at that time)...now , if you've read the boards at all then you already know what i'm going to say...your craft name is a personal thing in my opinion...but i am a solitary practioner and have never been in the situation to where some one would have given me a name at all...so, i don't think there's anything wrong at all in using your craft name anywhere you like...i live a pagan lifestyle everyday of my ife and try to apply it to all that i do...i don't feel that in using it in these groups only makes me a cyber pagan at all...you say yours came from a comic book that you felt an affinity to the character?..mine came from a tattoo i have one night when i was searching for my craft name...i asked the moon to please help me and it happened to be full that night...all of the sudden the moon came in the window and cast a small spotlight on my tattoo and the name popped in my head and there it was...i don't see a thing wrong with your name or how you found it...maybe the comic was brought to you for that reason...i like it and i see no problem in you using it! Many Blessings LadyBeast |

I COMPLETELY disagree with the notion that you know a cyber-pagan by their use of a craft name and a nick as one and the same. I have never heard of this before, and I find the very idea offensive. Craft name, nick, pet-name...what's the difference? If you choose a name for personal, spiritual significance, or if you wake up with it one morning, as a gift from the God/dess, it makes no difference whatsoever. It is what the name means to YOU, and what it does for you. What is in a name, is what it means to YOU. When my mother chose the name that was put on my birth certificate, it meant something to her, and when I chose the name for my daughter, it meant something to me. At one time I was Russian Orthodox, and I chose a name for myself as part of my baptism that was a name to be used in the church, and in my relationship with God. That part of my life no longer exists. I suppose it is very likely that one day, I will choose a name different from "Shuvani", but that is my choice, whether I use it as a nick as well, is also my choice. High Priest/esses, Silver RavenWolf, and etcetera, are only Human Beings, and as my father always says, "opinions are like assholes, everybody has one." Choose what makes you feel special, and good. It is a personal choice, and yours alone to make. The very Brightest of Blessings, ~Shuvani |

Well here is my take on it. Use whatever name feels right for you. it is between you and the Goddess and God what you care to be identified by. I use the name ~Raveness~ in a lot of things as I feel a closeness with Ravenes. I am not just a cyber-pagan as like Ladybeast I live a Pagan lifestyle everyday. It is who I am. There are always goign to be people outhere who have to belittle you in anyway possible. Just because it isn't their way doesn't make it not right. Trust in yourself and follow the way it leads. love and laughter |
