I have butterflies in my stomach today. It's not very often I get a little starstruck, but today I fear I will be letting the side down, for no other than 80s icon and heart-throb Adam Ant is here to sign copies of his autobiography Stand and Deliver.
Adam was one of the most successful stars of the era; his face adorned my wall alongside most of the teenagers from Aldershot to Aberdeen. His look, based on a mixture of trends from warrior to pirate, marked him as a true pop icon.
He is a very quiet man and seems a little insecure, but I guess when one suffers from bi-polar disorder and needs constant monitoring and medicating life can't be easy. He has suffered from suicidal depression and has had to deal with public humiliation when he entered a London pub a few years ago with a gun. The UK tabloids were more than cruel when not understanding the full extent of his illness.
This, luckily, seems to be in the past and adoring fans line up around the shop, and they are soon sold out of his book.
To me there was no one quite like him, with his image and the Burundi beat of the two drummers in the band.
I am looking forward to reading his frank and honest book and won't forget him. He shakes my hand (which I probably won't wash!) and we leave, a special day for me.
