I have seen the The Yardbirds before and they do not dissappoint, and tonight is no different!!
The Yardbirds were one of the important bands in the 1960s London blues / pop / rock scene with members including Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Clapton left, not pleased with the pop direction of the band, just before the single "For Your Love" brought the Yardbirds fame, both throughout the UK and internationally.
They have a new guitarist 20 year old Ben King who is tipped to be the new Jimmy Page, and you can see why, he is extremely gifted. Their younger harmonica player Billy Boy Miskimmin gives the ageing stars a youthful appeal! They still have two of the original members Chris Dreja on guitar and Jim McCarty on drums.
I am suprised to see the age of the fans (60+). I would guess they are the original fans, there didnt seem to be too many second or third generation in the crowd, which is such a shame as they could give these young bands a real run for their money.
The set was great. They played all their famous tracks: 'For Your Love', 'Shape of things to come', plus new tracks from the album 'Birdland'. John Idan the lead singer and bass player is clearly unhappy with the sound, and he tells the crowd they nearly didn't play. I for one am glad they did. They are true professionals to the last, and they sounded amazing to me.
