Jon Lord is a British Hammond organ and piano player. He was born in Leicester on 9 June 1941. I am privaleged tonight to be near this musical legend as he opens the Kenton Theatre in Henley on Thames. He is local to the area and a keen supporter of the charitable organisation.
Most famous as a member of Deep Purple, he was also in Whitesnake, Paice, Ashton & Lord, Artwoods, and Flowerpot Men. He is recognized for combining rock and classical music.
In 1968, Jon co-founded Deep Purple, the band he was most well-known for. Jon and the drummer, Ian Paice, were the only constant band members for 34 years. He left Deep Purple after their UK tour in 2002 and was replaced with Don Airey.
Jon had been considering leaving the band for some time, due to his busy touring schedule and his concerto. In 2001, Don Airey was substituted for Jon for a month after a knee injury. This worked out, so Jon decided to leave in 2002.
Jon was well-respected for his mastery of the Hammond Organ. Some called him "Lord of the Hammond", and in his 34-year Deep Purple career, you can hear his distinctive solos amid many classic songs on their albums.
Hopefully I will also have the pleasure of seeing him perform at this year's Festival of Music and Arts in Henley on Thames. Watch this space!
